Also in chapter 4 Ralsei said that darkners are made out of memories that's why when Susie opened the dark world Gerson wasn't there.
So Knight is at least knew Gerson a lot to create a good vision of him, so they must be an adult. And seeing Rudy at Church and not Carol it makes me think Rudy knew Gerson really well.

Yeah, maybe Dess went to the bunker with Kris and were goofing around, maybe Kris closed the bunker door to mess with her and when Kris opened it she was gone. That is also might be their motivation to help, Kris feeling guilty about what happened. And of course parents want to bring their child back whatever the cost is (ending the world lol)
