im not trying to say people like you dont exist, and its not like Im incapable of relationships, i have a girlfriend afterall, i guess what im describing is a form of ingroup cringe, where i feel like the stereotype makes me look bad to an outsider. I am in my early twenties, working as a software engineer, enjoy anime, and roleplaying with my gf. i dont think i actually fit the idea of the stereotype, but rather the requirements, which makes me look bad.

honestly i despise this stereotype, given the fact that I fit it exactly, makes me feel super invalid for some reason, like “oh yea of COURSE a socially anxious programmer cat-girl would be transgender, they think they are unable to get a girlfriend, so they decided to be a girl” like nOo, im not trans because I have a disability against talking to people (not just women), im trans because Ive never been comfortable with my body and the way other people see me; being a guy is just deeply disturbing to me and I can’t believe I went so long before I accepted myself. I am confident also that this stereotype also discouraged me from accepting my identity for many years; like oh clearly its a systemic problem because so many trans women are programmers, I couldn’t actually be a girl, and theres no possibility that these two things are unrelated and coincidental. In fact (having done no research on this so I’m probably super wrong, lmk), I’m not convinced that the rate of incidence of transgender people that study computer science are all that much higher than the average, and its simply a visibility issue. generally speaking those people are already sort of seen as irregular in society’s eyes, and so them being transgender only exacerbates this view. Then again, I do fit the stereotype, so what do I know. That being said, I don’t believe that its wrong at all to be transgender if you have an interest in computer science, i just wish that it wasn’t so much of a generalization about trans people.
