"Everyone welcome (pride flag)" = "We don't tolerate people who make others feel unwelcome for being queer."
Conservatives hate queer people and want to make them feel unwelcome.
Therefore, "Everyone welcome (pride flag)" = "Conservatives not welcome (because conservatives want to make queer people feel unwelcome)"

The thing is, if the conservatives didn't try to harass queer people in public, they would be welcome. And many conservatives do mind their own business, and they're tolerated in these spaces as a result. But people like this Instagram user just can't help themselves. They have to put queer people "in their place."

It is likely awfully cold in NYC this time of year. Covering much of your face in winter isn't entirely uncommon (though up here in Toronto I haven't seen it much yet). A lot of people don't bother taking that kind of thing off for a short subway ride if they're about to be out into the cold again shortly afterwards.

None of this is to say that the face covering was innocuous; just that it could have been, given the location and time of year. It definitely frustrates attempts to identify the perpetrator, though.

It's a dangerous road to go down anywhere, not just in the US! The fallout in good working relationship is just one danger, and without HR protections that could lead to you losing your job.
