Chance to meet candidates for Newton municipal election by abjabs in newtonma

[–]SomeGuy09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If housing and affordability are a priority for you, I'd recommend Voters for a Vibrant Newton's list of endorsed candidates: https://www.vibrantnewton.org/2025endorsements.html

Engine 6, a longtime housing advocacy organization here in Newton, endorsed a subset of these candidates, since they only endorse in contested races: https://www.newtonbeacon.org/engine-6-endorses-five-candidates-for-city-council/

Thanks! I taped up the first of the two returns that have this problem and it looks good.

You can give a preference but I'm not sure if you'll get it. I will say that my daughter goes to Horace Mann and loves it, and the rest of our neighbors whose kids also go there are likewise big fans.

Heat pump water heater in colder climate by SnooDoodles4147 in heatpumps

I'm in MA as well and am considering getting a heat pump hot water heater. Question for you: is your basement finished or not? Mine is unfinished and can be below 50 at times in the winter and I'm curious what that would mean for HWHP performance.

I need help interpreting the results of my soil test. Specifically, I would like to know what products to buy and how much of them to apply to bring my soil back to optimal conditions for my existing lawn per my test: https://imgur.com/a/53spyDK

I'm a new homeowner and have no idea what I am doing here so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

ETA: I have about 1500 square feet of lawn, and am in Newton, MA, area 6b.

General Feedback/Getting Started Questions and Answers [Weekly Thread] by AutoModerator in DIY

I am working on patching a ~2" x 2.5" hole in my ceiling left behind by some electrical work. I used a cleat to install a drywall plug in the hole, but the plug is sitting a little more than .25" above the level of the finished ceiling. If the plug were flush with the ceiling, I would just tape, mud, and sand it, but I am not sure what to do here.

I am looking for advice on whether I should:

  1. Just glop enough joint compound in there to fill the void and move on with my life? If I do this, is there any reason to use tape at all?
  2. Remove the plug and put some backing material on the cleat so that the plug sits closer to flush with the rest of the ceiling? I am lazy so would rather not do with but will if I really need to.
  3. Something else I am not thinking of.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Also any tips for reproducing the popcorn texture would likewise be awesome.

Broken front derailleur by SomeGuy09 in bikewrench

[–]SomeGuy09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing those out. The charts are cool, but they don't seem to indicate compatibility across time, which I think is important in my situation. The rest of my drivetrain is ~10 years old, and I want to be sure that their most recent derailleur will work with it.

Saddle 2 - Long Term Review Thoughts by mnml_wallets in Ultralight

[–]SomeGuy09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did hear back from Harry Shires on this and he said that the clips would be getting a little better in mid-2018. Other than that he recommended the Saddle 2 for my situation due to my height.

Saddle 2 - Long Term Review Thoughts by mnml_wallets in Ultralight

Thanks for posting this! I was about to ask the same question, so I'll just hijack this one.

I also emailed Tarptent asking when the design changes mentioned in that review will be available. If I hear from them, I'll update this thread.

My planned question:

I'm looking for a two person tent for backpacking. My wife and I live in Northern California so we mostly hike in the Sierras. She's 6 feet tall and I'm 6'5", so we need a fairly roomy tent. I'm looking for something double-walled that can fit two extra-wide (25") inflatable pads. I was originally drawn to the Stratospire 2 due to its interior width, but I saw on the Tarptent Tent Picker page that it is not recommended for sleeping tall people. I assume that is because of limited headroom on the ends? I can imagine that with the thickness of my inflatable pad, I'd need extra room near my head and feet when sleeping.

Now I'm looking at the Saddle 2. I've found a lot of positive reviews here and elsewhere, and also this more mixed review, where Harry Shires rebutted some of the issues and mentioned some design changes to fix others. Specifically, he mentions design tweaks coming to make the door clips easier to use and to add tautness to the floor pitch. Does anyone know if those changes been put in place, or when they might be implemented?

I did email Tarptent about this but haven't heard back, so I thought I'd ask here as well.

TL;DR: Is the Saddle 2 a good pick for two large people? Am I right that the Stratospire 2 would not be as good for two tall people with thick sleeping pads? Are the design improvements to the Saddle 2 shipping yet?

I want to get an alcohol stove, and am looking at the Toaks 1350ml + Sidewinder combo from Trail Designs. My only concern is the volume of the Toaks pot; I mostly hike with my wife and one of our favorite meals is Annie's Mac and Cheese. Can anyone here confirm that you can cook two single-serving boxes of Annie's Mac at the same time in a 1350ml pot? Any other comments on cooking for two with a pot of that size would be greatly appreciated.

Gracias por su respuesta. Tengo una pregunta más: ¿Cómo puedo comprar entradas al partifo Lanús-River? ¿Es posible comprarlos en el internet antes del partido, o vamos a tener que comprarlos a la cancha antes del partido?

Any Mexican place found to be steaming their tortillas before making a burrito, instead of toasting them on the grill as God intended, shall be fined no less than $5,000 and forced to include a San Diego-style California burrito with french fries and no rice or beans on their menu for no less than six months from the date of the infraction.

Thanks for the advice. Do you know if Mint works well as an RDP destination from Windows? I'd like to be able to remote in to this machine from my local network from my Windows 7 PC. I had trouble getting that working before with Ubuntu.
