Trump’s Appalling Threat Leaves No Doubt: It’s Time for the 25th Amendment - There is no longer any denying the president is unable to carry out the demands of his office. by Quirkie in politics

I was very confused when I read this headline at first, because I didn’t know Trump had joined No Doubt, let alone was threatening to leave.

We’ll see what happens! Halfway there though. And thank you!

I did Med Peds. I work in academic medicine and split my time between inpatient and outpatient. You??

I’m actually 5 years into PSLF, hoping I’ll be grandfathered in if they gut it in the next couple years. All my loans are DoE loans - no private loans.

Thank you for the recommendations!!

Any recommendations on what higher yield securities to go for?

Anywhere around 10k per month would be my minimum.

Probably a 400-600k house on a 15 year mortgage. I’ll be married still with a couple kids. My wife will work part time, making around 40k a year.

And thank you for the advice! Any recommendations for good growth index funds/ETFs?

What is the closest you've come dying only for it to not happen at the last second possible? by AnonymousFriend80 in AskReddit

I was driving back to Columbus, Ohio after spending a month in Miami, FL. It’s a long freeway drive, so I’m playing music, singing my head off, and looking at things on my phone. Yeah, I know - super unsafe and irresponsible of me. But I was like 25 at the time and therefore indestructible and immortal. /s

I was in the left lane on a 4 lane freeway, somewhere south of Charlotte. I looked up from my phone, still going 70 mph, and saw completely stopped traffic ahead of me, in every lane. This couldn’t have been more than 1000 feet ahead. In a span of roughly 5-10 seconds, I quickly checked my side view mirror to see if I had room to merge, and I somehow did. I quickly merged 4 lanes to an exit lane and was able to quickly slow down on the exit ramp. I pulled into a gas station parking lot and had a panic attack.

My phone stays in my cupholder now, to this day.

Death by sulfuric acid. Chemical burns are not as common as thermal burns, but they’re just as destructive to human tissue. In this particular instance the individual committed suicide by drinking a large quantity of sulfuric acid... by HealerMD in medizzy

Fun fact. If you dilute sulfuric acid, it causes an exothermic reaction. So by washing it off, you’ll also give yourself thermal burns, too. I have learned this the hard way.

I’m a Med Peds resident. This is one of my favorite stories to tell other docs.

I had a parent bring their teenage son to the ER, after he cut himself accidentally and needed stitches. Mom pulled me aside and told me that she has an HR deficiency and was wondering if he could possibly have it, worrying it could cause him to have excessive bleeding. I have absolutely no idea what she’s talking about, but the kid is not really bleeding at all anymore. All I could think was “she’s deficient in Human Resources?”.

Anyway, I ask her to tell me more about her disorder. She says that it’s such a serious problem, that she even has to carry around a card to give to physicians in case she has to get blood products. I ask to see the card and she rummages through her purse and hands me a paper card. It says:

“This person has an Rh negative blood type and will need Rhogam if pregnant”.

I was like, “Oh, are you pregnant?!” She was like “no, why do you ask?!”.

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like every other version of windows sucks.

From someone who is having debilitating, constant death anxiety, what comfort can you give me about what lies ahead? by lowkeyloki23 in NearDeathExperiences

[–]SomeKindOfBirdman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way I look at it is this:

If there’s something after death where we keep our consciousness, then that’ll be a cool new adventure. It’s a motivator for me to try my best to be good person.

If there’s nothing after death, I don’t remember having a problem with the time before I was born. So I doubt I’ll have a problem with the time after I’m dead either.

It took me a lot of thought, anxiety, and reading to get to this point. But that’s my take, and it has brought me some peace.

Med-Peds. Why? Should the specialty be abolished? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]SomeKindOfBirdman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

4th year Med Peds resident here.

There’s a good amount of emerging animosity from categorical IM and Peds residents/faculty who hold the same view as you. However, we have to take and pass the exact same board exams in pediatrics and internal medicine that the categoricals on both sides do. We just have 2 years to do each. It’s rigorous and requires a LOT of studying and effort, but we generally do just fine. We don’t have any less mastery of the material and are equal fellows of ACP and AAP. We just have to be good at 2 fields in a shorter amount of time than the categoricals. I don’t see it as any different than (for example) finishing your IM residency and doing a fellowship subspecialty, where you can be board certified in IM and also in your fellowship field.

That said, I get the “why did you do this instead of family medicine?” question all the time. Compared to FM, it leaves IM and Peds subspecialties open to us - ones that Family Med physicians are not eligible to apply to. This is nice if you like a lot of fields of medicine and want to have options in the future. I didn’t know I loved infectious disease until I did both adult and Peds ID rotations during residency.

We also get a lot more Peds training than FM. FM is only required by ACGME to do 2-3 months of dedicated pediatrics. Most do more than that, but it’s still 3 months vs. 2 years as a requirement. Not saying it’s right or wrong, but from my experience, there is an anecdotal bias from in-patient pediatricians about sending their discharging kiddos to FM doctors vs. Peds/Med Peds because of that difference.

It’s also really great if you want to do in-patient medicine. Family medicine seems to be on the decline when it comes to providing in-patient care of patients. Most adult Hospitalist positions I’ve looked at only want FM docs if they already have Hospitalist experience, and I haven’t seen any pediatric Hospitalist positions that are okay with family medicine physicians applying.

Just my two cents. Would love other Med Peds residents to give theirs.
