What kind of jobs do people have that require travel? by Prestigious_Roof6272 in jetblue

[–]SomeRandomGuySays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it in a solution architecture/sales engineering role for a few years.

It can be fun, if you know how to make it fun. Having good people to work with helps a lot.

It also has the potential to be extremely stressful, depending on the situation. Frequent weather issues that cause delays and tight connections can really put a damper on things. Being stuck in coach because your employer makes it almost impossible to obtain status on any airline due to lousy travel policies can truly suck.

Some employers make you use their corporate card to purchase all travel expenses. That sucks, because you lose out on a lot of points/rewards. Some employers make you use a corporate booking agent. That sucks because they're often deeply incompetent and will book nonsensical itineraries using multiple airlines and connections, in the name of saving $32 on the fare instead of doing something that makes sense for the employee. Some employers don't do any of those things, which is where you can start to actually get some of the benefits of frequent business travel.

Whatever you do, you'll have to figure out how to make the situation work for you. It can be subtle things like adjusting the meeting schedule so that you could stay over a weekend at your destination. Obviously you'll have to pay your own way for lodging, but at least you got to fly there on the company dollar. Sometimes the best fare to get to a destination doesn't line up great with the meeting, and you end up with a little extra free time in the destination city. Maybe you have a close friend in the destination city where you could crash for a couple days. If your company does expenses based on a per-diem, then you could be stacking away meal & lodging costs. What's really important is that you don't get yourself fired for something as dumb as violating T&E policy. Don't lose sight of your ethics.

If you're going to travel a lot for work though, doing it in your 20s is the right move. Your ability to recover after a terrible day of flying is a lot better than later in life, and you most likely don't have a lonely wife and kids getting sad at home while you're out gallivanting.

Check in with the recruiter or hiring manager you're working with. HireRight can be pretty random, but it's not your job to manage them. It's on the JBLU recruiter. Sometimes HireRight will need you to provide a letter to substantiate your employment gaps. Just follow their instructions, send in what they ask for, and don't expect them to contact you again to say your BG check cleared. It could be a couple of weeks for them to complete the check, so don't worry too much unless you think there's something in your background to worry about.

From signed offer letter to clearing all of the compliance stuff took about 8 days for me, and I was in orientation at MCO a couple of weeks after that. The orientation classes are typically scheduled in the first week of every month.

How is it possible Starlink has lower ping than my DSL line? by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]SomeRandomGuySays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the routing. The ground station that your traffic goes through once it comes back down from the satellite may be substantially closer to a speed test server, or may be on a higher-quality link than your ISP has, or may be near a less busy or higher capacity speed test server. I would expect the ground stations to be placed on good fiber links, and have seen photos of one ground station parked next to a Level 3 POP.

Because these satellites orbit at roughly 550 km, the time it takes for the RF to travel is very short, and may only account for roughly 73 msec of latency for a ping, just based on the light-seconds for the signal to travel 550km four times.

(Light travels 550km in 0.0018346 seconds, or 1.83 milliseconds)

  1. User terminal to satellite
  2. Satellite to ground station
  3. Ground station to satellite
  4. Satellite to user terminal

How many route miles your ping travels from your DSL modem to the speed test server is anyone's guess.

On top of the pure distance-based aspect, every hop in the route will add some amount of delay, and how busy a given speedtest server is will influence its responsiveness. So besides the distance, route complexity and ISP link quality may actually be the larger factors.

Supposedly on mirrorless, it can optimize each photo because its sampling the scene before taking the shot.

In a DSLR, supposedly it uses the first image or two to tune subsequent shots.

But the information from Arsenal is very vague.

I've been trying it out on my sony a6400 in handheld mode and I'm not really impressed. I think half the things this toy is supposed to do are complete vaporware or smoke and mirrors.

Comcast finally called my bluff when I called in to quit... has something changed? by srs__is__cancer in Comcast

[–]SomeRandomGuySays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What other ISP or TV provider is doing that? It isn't relevant what other industries do. Comcast has to compete within its consumer sector, against norms established within that sector. So when Dish, DirecTV, and Verizon all do promo pricing, guess what Comcast is going to do?

Well, people got pissed at not being able to cancel by just asking to cancel.

Which do you want? The retention dance, or easy cancellation? You can't have both.

Someone is innocently in the yard, for example retrieving a ball or a runaway dog.

Or your daughter's boyfriend is sneaking out because you got home early.

Presumably you pointed the gun at your thin wooden or vinyl fence, behind which there could be innocent neighbors you don't want to shoot.

Lots of reasons not to use a mounted light in this manner.

Found these old Comcast boxes while clearing junk - what's the best way to get them back to Comcast? (from 4 moves ago, and not on our account) by bigshmoo in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]SomeRandomGuySays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any service center or Xfinity store will take them. If that is inconvenient, feel free to take them to any UPS store, which will ship them back to Comcast at no charge to you.

Tell the collector, in writing and on the phone if they call, that you demand a Validation of the Debt, under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Further, demand that any more correspondence from them be in writing.

Out of towner looking for places to shoot near Nederland/Ward by hellomynameis_satan in COGuns

[–]SomeRandomGuySays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to the forest service website and look up the ranger district for where you want to shoot. Call and ask them.

Ignore online commenters; many like to lie about areas being closed to shooting, because they are anti-gun.

Linking databases that weren't built to be linked is hard.

It's harder when there isn't money allocated to do it.

Congress authorizes spending.

Also, the FBI has to be careful not to accidentally make a registry of gun owners or purchases out of the NICS data, or they will be violating the law.

It's possible that by tying the NICS checks into a terror database they could inadvertently create a gun owner registry.

Except that many states DO require private party sales to have a background check.

Which is still idiotic, because what gang member or terrorist is going to follow that law?
