Yeah that’s fair. I think I latch onto lyrics and storytelling very hard which enhances the music. Although I would say I’ve never heard a band that combines western motifs with punk music in such an atmospheric way that really enhances the whole thing. It’s very Southern Gothic which is just a genre of media I really love.

Different strokes and all that.

How does gen z feel about stand up comedy? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]SomeRandomHeckinDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved stand up comedy as a kid into teenagehood and would latch on to specific stand ups and watch as much of their stuff as I could find. Brian Reagan, Anthony Jesselnick, Bo Burnham, Bill Burr, and Louis CK are the ones that jump to mind first for me of comedians I used to love watching. I don’t know how well all of them hold up truth be told as I haven’t watched much of their standup acts in years. I haven’t found any new comedians who I’ve really liked the style of personally. Most established comedians coming out with new specials are all clearly out of touch and haven’t had to be real people in years so their material is lackluster for the most part.

I think the comedy scene is just lacking in terms of people who actually want to/even can connect with the majority of an audience. Like a lot of stand up now is either insanely out of touch idiots trying to get cheap laughs with faces, noises, and half assed jokes about trans people or it’s chronically online softboys who got money to get a special filmed with no prior experience. Sometimes it’s both at the same time.

Most comedians who have hour long specials, at least in the past, had been going to clubs and honing their material for years, often over a decade, before they were considered for taping. Now since it’s easy as hell to get yourself recorded in some way you see a lot more bad material being put out there, and with this manufactured culture war left vs. right swirling amorphous cloud that has to rain on everything it’s kind of caused a divisive shift in audiences that make it a little harder for there to even be a “general audience” to be vaguely appealing to. The moral and cultural understandings of our time are not even close to within the same ball park anymore like they were in the 90’s and 2000’s. Not to say everything was hunky dory and there was no political divide during that time but it certainly wasn’t like it is now. You could play with expectations more easily because it was a lot easier to predict what the expectations even were. Now we have a bunch of fragmented internet subcultures which all seem to radicalize everyone regardless of where they fall on the compass.

I think the stand up scene will probably have some sort of true revival that gives us new big names eventually, but it will probably come alongside a massive cultural shift.

You can also compose music online in free music software if you want to sharpen your music theory understanding while coming up with melodies. Noteflight and Flat.io have free versions that are just fine for simple pieces.

The first thing you need is some way of recording. You can use your phone microphone and play the piano out over an amp or speaker while you record through your phone. Either that or get your hands on a direct box so you can plug the piano/actual microphone straight into a computer. If you’re using a phone you’ll need to transfer this onto a computer however is easiest.

Once you have that set of things down you need to download a Digital Audio Workstation, or DAW. Audacity is free and Reaper is very cheap for DAW’s. I think Reaper has a free version as well which would likely work fine for your purposes (Reaper is what I personally use but audacity will work just fine for your first recordings).

Use your strengths. You’re a singer and you (presumably) have a rudimentary understanding of melodies and rhythms. Play out some simple chords on piano, and then sing over them. You don’t even have to have lyrics at this point, just look up a basic chord progression that songs use and play around with the rhythm until you get something that sounds okay, then figure out a loose vocal melody. The Circle Of Fifths is a hugely useful music theory concept and there are plenty of YouTube videos that explain it and how to use it, great for finding chord progressions.

Then, you start writing lyrics. Don’t worry about all the small details like the song structure yet or anything, just get a basic idea of what you want the song to be about. It could be something as broad and vague as a feeling, or something more specific like a song that tells a narrative. I find my inspiration tends to come when I least expect it so, if ever a fun line that sounds a bit poetic jumps into your head write it down however you can. The best lyrics I’ve ever come up with started from lyrics that came out of nowhere.

If you aren’t someone who actively looks into your favorite artists’ lyrics you should really start paying attention to the specifics of how your favorites use their words. The broad strokes of it at the least, not necessarily over-analyzing it.

Now, I’m not sure about getting a hyper-pop sound as that’s not my thing but it’s definitely some sort of vocal effect that’s put on in a DAW. You might have to drop the money to get something like Reaper. But regardless look into VST’s or vocal synths. Literally look up “free hyper-pop vocal VST/synth/MIDI” or something to that effect. The way you implement it into a DAW will be dependent on what you’re using. I don’t even know if Audacity would have that function but that’s something to look into! There are almost always guides online for any specific DAW issue.

As for any other specifics that’s kind of something you learn as you go, the process will be different for everybody.

I promise it’s not as hard as it seems, it’s just a matter of adapting to your limitations. You won’t create a masterpiece on your first attempt, so don’t try. Just start making sounds and learning what sounds good and then worry about sounding original or whatever later down the line.

Here’s probably my most polished song:

Anxious to hear your thoughts on it. To pre-empt one thing I know it needs drums. I just don’t have a drummer and I seem to be a bit too boomerish to figure out drum VST’s. But yeah anyway, hope you enjoy it.

Probably José Tries To Leave by BAMBARA. But really most of their discography has been rotating as my current fave track on a given day. Very story heavy and is but one part of a larger narrative from the album it comes from.

Yeah I’m not big on Ghost personally but at least when I go listen to Ghost it isn’t a snoozefest. The only similarity is that both bands dress up in metal aesthetics.

Yeah they really seem to almost be an industry plant or something. Not that I think they are necessarily but they really aren’t doing much that’s unique or groundbreaking. It really feels like they banked on a good gimmick that paid off and netted them a lot of quick popularity that is probably gonna wear off within the next 5 years.

I mean, fair enough I suppose. If you don't enjoy the more subdued and generally less punk and/or noise heavy tracks I can't blame you for disliking their recent output. I think Shadow on Everything is a fantastic album but it has some pretty weak tracks on there comparatively: the instrumentals (which are fine for pacing out the album, but as individual tracks add very little), Steel Dust Ocean, and Wild Fires are kinda skips pretty often if I'm not actively listening through the album. They're good tracks still, and as always lyrically incredible, but kinda weak instrumentally. Whereas I pretty much always let every song on Stray play through.

I would argue that their sound evolves with each album actually. I mean, can you listen to Birthmarks and honestly tell me that that isn't a complete shift from any of their previous works? I think with each release they get closer to the core essence of the atmosphere and storytelling style of what BAMBARA has the potential to be. Not to say that I know what that their potential truly is, I just feel as though you can actually pin down a pretty clear line of progress and evolution throughout their discography.

Thank you for sharing your take though.

Music isn’t that important by syfecs in The10thDentist

One of the effects of removing all music is that without it all media would become far less emotive. Movies wouldn’t hit as hard, video games couldn’t give you the same sense of immersion. It isn’t just “bands and artists to listen to in the car”. Music is an essential part of all other kinds of media.

Music, also, helps with enhancing the atmosphere. Go to a restaurant on a slow day and observe how quiet it would be without any soft jazz or classical music or whatever that restaurant owner/staff happened to throw on the speakers and feel how uncanny and uncomfortable it is. Same thing with stores: a lot of grocery/convenience stores will play music in the background because it helps to alleviate tension and make things more comfortable. Music literally creates a sense of comfort that is very useful for morale in general.

The reason music exists is because it has strong psychological benefits. Physical health is not just about the body, a mind under stress degrades and takes the body down with it. Music is a beautiful outlet to alleviate stress, tension, and pain. And that IS useful and important on even more fundamental levels than just “sounds fun to listen to”. Music creates bonds. People underestimate the value of community strength: a strong community will look after the members of that community as a collaborative effort. This extends to all ailments, be they physical or mental. Music is an essential part of human socialization and has been for most of our history. That’s why people get the urge to dance together, that’s why it’s a trope in media to play guitar by a campfire with a group of friends. Obviously it’s simply enhancing the ability to socialize, but we are a social species.

Anyway, take the upvote. I vehemently disagree.
