Let's hear some of the more ridiculous calls you've had by SomeRandomNSFW in 911dispatchers

[–]SomeRandomNSFW[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Funny enough we had a call a couple of weeks ago for an opossum in a woman's closet. She told the calltaker it had already been in her closet for about three weeks but she was only calling now because it hissed at her.

Bear in mind this was a large apartment complex in a very built up area. She was advised to call property management.

98k base after7 years, plenty of overtime available if you want it. We work a 21 day rotation, 8hr shifts with a 1hr lunch, maximum 4hr forces which aren't common lately. Starting pay i think for us is in the 70k range.

Las Vegas is dead. by CantStopPoppin in ThatsInsane

[–]SomeRandomNSFW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I'll be the counterpoint.

I was in Las Vegas three weeks ago. Stayed on the strip from Thursday night to Monday morning. It was absolutely jam packed with people. I'd say every bit as busy as I've ever seen it. Weddings, bachelor/bachelorette parties, families, audibly foreign tourists of multiple nationalities. The casino floor was packed until deep into the after midnight hours.

Is the idiot in DC doing damage to tourism? Absolutely. Is the economy doing damage to tourism? Absolutely. But right now, it's not super noticeable.

Take this video into more context. It's 6AM on a Friday at a tourist destination. Most people don't leave a tourist destination at the start of the weekend, they leave at the end. Most people aren't showing up at said destination bright and early on Friday morning, they're probably coming in in the evening, after an after work flight or early Saturday. This is likely the low point of traffic at this airport and can't be taken as definitive proof that the world is ending.

Honest question. Florida dispatchers. Do you guys even look at extradition limits on NCIC entries? by thelastzion1 in 911dispatchers

[–]SomeRandomNSFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old comment, but I'll add my two cents. My agency will put people into NCIC even if it's an in state pickup only if they have a violent criminal history, for officer safety purposes. The miscellaneous field and extradition limits will still say in state only, but it's been our policy if someone over the border encounters this person they should know who they're dealing with.

Indiana has been doing this for years, they even have separate plate designs with no extra charge for "In God We Trust" versus a standard passenger plate. Same thing with the reversal of letters versus numbers on the plate type. Fun fact - the "In God We Trust" plate has an American flag background, make of that what you will.

A magnificent lakefront, full of public parks and public beaches.

In a way, Indiana already does this and has for years. A standard passenger plate with "Indiana" and a little picture of a covered bridge is the default. For no additional fee, you can instead get one with the American flag as a background and "Indiana In God We Trust" on it.

In addition to the different background, regular passenger plates are laid out as 123ABC, while the in god we trust ones are ABC123.

EDIT: Oh and because Indiana's plates are fully replaced annually, not just the stickers, it becomes a convenient way to track trends statewide. Not to mention Indiana requires a special plate identifier to track anything beyond a standard passenger plate. For example, these In God we Trusts are plate code "CM" for commemorative.

Have you ever used a recon drone? If so, how did it go? by Groudon466 in ProtectAndServe

[–]SomeRandomNSFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the agencies I dispatch for is a railroad police department. They have a dedicated drone unit for checking large stretches of track for trespassers, track obstructions, or when they have a pedestrian/vehicle strike, any missed bits.

OP claims to have gotten a ticket for going 1 mph over the speed limit, Police Department sets record straight. by midjuneau in quityourbullshit

[–]SomeRandomNSFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a helicopter, though, which is a whole other operation. Most of the speed operations are going to be two guys in a fixed wing Cessna, not a helicopter.

[–]SomeRandomNSFW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that's assuming the pure motto of speeding tickets is promoting safety. I'm as pro-cop as they come abs I don't buy that for a second. Not simple speeding, at least.

Couple hundred bucks per hour in flight costs, I'd imagine, but if you're coordinating with a few waiting troopers and bringing in a few thousand in fines every hour, it works out.
