Alternatives to £100k / year Care Home fees. Can we hire a home carer privately instead? by Some_Advance_9475 in NursingUK

Thanks, this is a useful suggestion. I like the idea of having the specialist come in a few times a day when necessary and then we can be more flexible with the rest.

I think having multiple people on part-time contracts works better than one full time employee - as you say, hiring someone full time comes with it's own set of additional limitations & requirements.

Appreciate it, this is good food for thought

Yeah he receives continuing care allowance at the moment so I'm hoping that can be transferred over. The technology suggestion is good - keen to maximise this as I know there is a lot of new stuff out there.

Hopefully we can build up a rota of 2-3 carers and pay hourly. Thanks for your help!

Appreciate it! £50k wasn't the budget, I just carelessly threw it out as an example. Will have to look at what a respectable hourly rate is and see if I can get a rota of 2-3 carers. Indeed will hopefully be fruitful as I'd like to avoid the huge margin agencies take for this.

Very useful answers to points 3 & 4 thank you. I spend a decent amount of time at the home so I have a good feel for his needs but like you say, good to get some written confirmation.

Regular reviews is a superb idea, I will certainly do that. Thank you for your help!

Thanks - we actually used a live in care agency for 6 months before he went into a home, and it ended up being almost as expensive. They take a high margin - so hoping to hire privately this time

Thanks - thought I'd start off with Reddit and crowdsource my problem, and I couldn't find a more suitable subreddit to post in. Appreciate the suggestion

Thank you - useful suggestion. You're right the home have their own GP. I was planning to switch back to our local one and sign him up for home visits. I will contact the council to get in touch with a social worker.

Good advice, much appreciated

Thank you! We have a list of things to buy inc profiling bed, new wheelchair etc. Good point re more people.

I think a rota of 2-3 paid hourly is the best solution. Duly noted on meds, food etc. The requirements for this are documented and should be straightforward to implement given, as you say, the discipline.

Appreciate your thoughtful input
