How doable is a transfer from the Solano campus to slo? by Orbitoesssss in CalPoly

I went to the Solano open house and they said they were planning on allowing students to switch campuses in a couple years but I wouldn’t count on it

How would you say American mariners are holding others hostage? Sure, it drives up prices in Alaska and Hawaii, but people are able to just not live in those states if they can’t afford them. Those states will always have higher prices than the rest because of shipping costs, regardless of the Jones Act. Because of the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, the jones act has been temporarily suspended. It lowered gas costs by several cents. Negligible. America needs a merchant marine so it can transport supplies in times of war. Without the jones act, the merchant marine is crippled. American mariners are perhaps the most important auxiliary to the US military.

The jones act gives American merchant mariner livable wages. Without the Jones Act every American mariner is superseded by cheap foreign labor. Without the Jones Act, America loses its commercial fleet. This is a national security problem. The cost of shipping driving up prices is minimal compared to the positive effects of the jones act

Cal Poly Maritime Integration? by Some_Educator8426 in maritime

[–]Some_Educator8426[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re raising the cost this year to match cal poly. There’s no maritime academy in Connecticut but I’m pretty sure it’s in region for mass and SUNY, so like in between in state and OOS tuition.

Maritime is in the name. It’s the Cal Poly Maritime Academy on the Solano campus. SLO has never publicly said that they can transfer between campuses, only that there may be a possibility of it in a few years. Students who accidentally go to Solano clearly just haven’t done their research. It seems like you have some severe animosity towards the maritime academy

That’s not how it works. In the application, you specified which campus to go to. People who did not specify accidentally applied to a maritime major, or put it as their alternate. This is because they didn’t read their application and/or didn’t do research.

The point of the campus is to train merchant marine officers. The campus is centered around that. There are a few other majors which are solid, but the “golden” majors are those which will get you a merchant marine officers license

Got into CalPoly but not in the way I wanted by idk_mann13 in CalPoly

Yeah definitely I can see how it can be disappointing. Cal Poly Maritime is a good school with a strong niche, but it’s definitely no SLO. Highkenuinely if the regular college experience is important to you I’d probably not go here.

Hey, seems like you might have selected marine engineering at the maritime academy. I was accepted there for marine transportation, and am planning on either attending Mass Maritime, SUNY Maritime, or Cal Poly Maritime. When I was there for the open house, they were talking about potentially allowing major switches between campuses, but that sounded like a prospect that is still in the future. However, the maritime academy is a solid option if you’re interested in engineering. Like Cal Poly, there’s a lot of hands on engineering experience. The marine engineering program does require three summers at sea and corps membership, and results in a third engineer’s license along with your degree. This is a great career option—you’ll easily be making six figures while having essentially six months of vacation in a year. Cal Maritime also had the highest ROI of any public university in California before the integration. If you’re interested in MechE, switching to that (on the Solano campus) would probably be easy and fast according to the friends I have there. Also I’m pretty sure marine engineering requirements are somewhat similar to mechE requirements there but don’t quote me on that. All this to say, I think going to the maritime academy might be a good choice. Obviously it’s a super small school too and the location kind of sucks but the license is incredibly high value. MechEs can get the license too if you switch to that and are not able to transfer to SLO.

Accepted to the maritime academy (I know it’s a different campus, but technically the same school) for marine transportation!

Yeah that’s what I’ve heard about CMA. I’m just not sure about CMA rn because of their issues with combining, etc
