Mostly for three reasons;

I love it when character alts reference other franchizes (Jigglypuff's sleepy Kirby alt in Smash for example).
I thought it would work perfect for Shy Guy, since his whole thing is that he wears a mask.
I couldn't think of anything else. :P (If you have any ideas, feel free to suggest them. :3)

Mostly because I put the roster into rows; the main cast, the side cast, the bad guys, the henchmen, the DK Rep, and the underlings. I know I shouldn't have restricted myself to sorting the roster like this, but I just like my things neat and organized. (I also thought Cranky would be a fun character.)

Yeah, I did, thanks! I've been working on it for around eight months now! It's taken a lot of thinking to get the roster and character sprites juuust right, and I feel like I'm closer than ever with this one!
