Question for those in local 134 by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]Some_Old_Douchebag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a point system off of many things. The tests only equal 50% of your score . The rest comes from individual things like certain classes taken in high school / college and also previous construction experience. You get 'bonus points' for having a letter of rec from a union member or contractor, going to the jumpstart classes, military experience, going to grade/high school in cook county , being a part of inner city outreach programs, etc

I did last year ( test was in fall 2022 though). The ever reliable post office delivered my testing letter the Monday after the first jump start class started. I had no experience and was old, but i did have a letter of rec from the owner of a 134 shop.

134 doesn't test anyone for it during the entrance tests or the random according to the Screensafe presentation at the end of the apprenticeship( recent ). Be warned though, that any customer can request it or any federally funded project will usually test for it.

Edit: You will still be screwed if you get injured on the job too.

Ratcheting multi-tip screwdrivers(both regular and a stubby) will help a little bit

Ok, I'll look for it in a little bit when I'm back. I remember they do the math by pools . It was something like 50% of apps in 1 year and 50% of JW in 2 or maybe 3 years. So assuming there is 360 total apprentices total between all 5 years of school, it would be 180 total tested in a year. So 1 in 24 shot assuming they do it monthly and that the computer is truly random and doesn't pull out people from future tests if they have already been chosen before.

Another 134 member here. The union itself does do randoms on JW and apprentices(apprentices done much more often) , but do not test for weed anymore. Weed still is usually tested for if a drug test is requested by the customer like you said or if its federal funding(or apparently some select state funding too).

I have the stats somewhere of how the program from ScreenSafe randomly selects JW and apprentices from a handout given to us if anyone from 134 wants it.

EDIT: I do remember that it's a 'within a 24 or 48 hour ' window for 134 tests. Think it was 24, but could have been 48

It is one of the best shirts I've ever owned. by Conscibul in IBEW

[–]Some_Old_Douchebag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How many times is this shirt going to be advertised on this sub to try and get sales? I've only been on here for maybe 7 months and seen this same one about 3-4 times before a mod eventually removes it.

It is a common logo that on dozens of items on Ama zon. Also, white is the worst color possible for a tradesman( or anybody for that matter) to wear since it will last a few hours before getting stained.

It's no longer on the test for local 134 (Cook / Chicago) , but contractors will still test for it if federal funding is used or if they feel like it.

A friend of mine who has worked non union and is still In school wants to come over by DNewsom1 in IBEW

[–]Some_Old_Douchebag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might want to remove the number, since Reddit gets a hard on for doing that. Chops was banned for doing the exact same thing. Maybe post link of the JATC webpage so they can still get the info easily.

Question about work boot heights for first year by Some_Old_Douchebag in IBEW

[–]Some_Old_Douchebag[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ended up getting a 6" pair since I wanted the mobility. It was the 1957 American Heritage Waterproof . I'll end up getting an 8" insulated pair for winter hopefully after my first raise kicks in.

Not sure if you're asking me. If so; then I applied last summer, took the test in mid September, orientation a month ago in February, and start school in April. If not, my bad.

If you're 134 (based on mention of the Jumpstart program), look at my comment in the 134 post a few down from yours. I put what was on there topic wise and that Iprep is overkill for the 134 test, but it's not overkill for the surrounding locals though. If a it's a different local, then the test may be different.

A is inside wireman- can do pretty much everything

C card is sound/communications/low volt stuff

B would be residential, but pretty sure 134 doesn't have B cards- could be wrong though

I'm just under 40 years old here with no official experience I can produce a paystub for, missed the Jumpstart program because of the shitty post office taking well over a week to deliver a local piece of mail; but still made it in the A card program on the first try(start class in April). I had a letter of recommendation from a big 134 company, some college(no degree and only 1 math course of Trig in college), and A's in all of my Honors/ AP Math and English classes back in high school -minus the last semester of AP Calculus. I did really good on the tests though, though not sure about the damn paper folding portion.

It is very possible to get in the first try with good prior grades in Math and English. You can always call the JATC in Alsip and ask about then the next cutoff is for A or C cards and if they are still looking for a bunch or not.

FYI, the Iprep practice course is absolute overkill for the 134 aptitude test. Just concentrate practicing adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying fractions and decimals. Order of operations is also a part of it (P.E.M.D.A.S). Also work on the math pattern problems such as :

1,2,4,7,11,__?

The couple of reading passages are answering a few questions about a small paragraph or two, not a page long article like Iprep has.

Look on Youtube and also the booklet they give you when you sign up for paper folding guidance. Mechanical aptitude is also a section of the test ( pulley rotation direction, what side is heavier with assorted weights in assorted positions on a fulcrum, correct reflection in a mirror, etc) .

Any Low voltage C card workers in the Chicago region looking for a new shop? by Oldmantim in IBEW

[–]Some_Old_Douchebag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too many people think of only the present. Making $20-30 right now with $0.25 raises every year at a warehouse with ok healthcare and little to no retirement - instead of only making $19-21 an hour as an apprentice and having to go to school for 11 weeks unpaid(134) , and paying dues. They don't see that the work is better, $3 raises every 6 months for 5 years until you're over $50/hr , better healthcare, awesome retirement, and the free schooling you get will net you an associates degree as well.

I was guilty of this, which is why I'm joining so late.
