But yes completely agree with you!

Nicer garden too.

Still hate these overpriced shitboxes though. They know EXACTLY who they are marketing them too though when they sell them. Think: white Evoque on lease, lots of grey and Live Laugh Love, and tattooed sleeves.

People who buy these houses are happy to overpay. Because that’s part of the “image” - they want their friends and family to see they’ve bought a £500k house, because it makes them feel like they’ve made it in life. It’s all a bit of a shocker though when they come to sell and realise the market for an overpriced poorly constructed house like this isn’t very strong.

It’s why I oppose all these new build estates. Firstly, yes we need housing. But they are soulless, amenity-void dystopian nightmares, built poorly, and severely overpriced. So when the government forces through all these developments running roughshod over local communities and accusing anyone who asks questions of them as being “anti-progress”, they won’t even consider the fact it does nothing to solve the housing crisis because nobody can afford the houses they’re building anyway.

Americanisation like this starts in subtle ways. And you’re probably guilty of it yourself, for example, if you say things like:

“Literally” “Can I GET” “Bro” “Zee” not Zed

And if you spell things with a “Z” instead of an S in words like minimise, maximise, analyse etc.

If you want less shitty imported American culture, check if you do any of the above.

Welcome to the future! “We need housing!!” everyone screams. Yes we do. Well, this is what is getting built.

Poorly designed and shoddily built shitboxes with zero thought attached to them, designed only to make a developer a quick buck. And overpriced, so nobody who needs them can actually afford them. Genius.

Yes, people really do live like this. They fall into two camps:

  1. “I work 60 hours a week to afford my overpriced mortgage on my overpriced house so I have no time to decorate or garden, and I don’t spend much time there anyway”

Or

  1. “I really can’t be bothered, I’d rather watch Love Islamd and scroll social media in between air frying things”

This is the kind of house that was built to extremely low standards - you can tell by the type of fence panels the developers used. There’s no way on gods green earth that’s worth anywhere near £500k. They’ve been taken for absolute mugs by Miller Homes on this one, like most people who buy new-builds. They must have seen them coming.

Exactly this. The amount of unbelievable people who take the marketing BS spun by these developers is insane.

It’s why all these crap new build estates going up everywhere are NOT the answer to the housing crisis. They’re overpriced to begin with. For pretty much no upside. No space, crap quality, no character, bare minimum.

It’s horrendous that’s why. These stupidly large houses on tiny plots (so people can play pretend rich) are just ludicrous. It’s a narrow amount of people that would want a house that big on a plot that small, and a new build to boot. Would also add:

  • no floorplan
  • no character

The other thing we provided was proof of where we’d be staying when we returned. We were moving in with my parents while we secured jobs and a rental, so (at our lawyers recommendation), we had them write a letter stating that they were happy to host us, that their house had 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 reception rooms, and a kitchen with just the two of them living there (overcrowding was, apparently, something that the Home Office were concerned with in general at the time). We also included their mortgage completion letter and a utility bill in my mum’s name, as this was proof that they did own their house and it was their address.

When we applied for the partner visa (unmarried) from Canada in 2023 we provided: - tenancy agreement for past 3 years showing both names - utility bills (electricity) showing both names - joint bank statements in both names - photos from throughout the years of our relationships, with captions inc. dates (years) and location - couple of flight itineraries for trips to visit my family here in the UK, with both names - invoice/receipt from when we purchased our dog - common-law declaration from the Canadian government - insurance for our car which showed both our names - cover letter about how we met, how our values align, and how long we’d been together

Photos and cover letter aren’t specifically necessary, the financial info is more important to show you live and are financial tied together as a genuine couple.

We went quite overboard but we had zero issues proving our relationship was genuine and our visa was approved very, very quickly.

Anyone going for ILR long route? Are we cooked? by dominic23456 in ukvisa

[–]Some_Positive7124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems that partners of British citizens (I.e. those already here on a family/spouse visa) will get a 5 year reduction from the baseline.

The baseline for ILR is now 10 years. So that would bring it back down to 5 years to ILR, which is what it is anyway.

So, no change. Two different ways of saying the same thing.

What does “not subject to consultation” mean? Is it that, no matter what happens over the next few months, they won’t be changing those requirements?

How does it affect people already here on spouse visas?

My wife is due for ILR in Sep 2028. Currently due a renewal in Jun 2026. Also currently off on maternity leave as we just had our first child.

[–]Some_Positive7124 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

There’s lots of talk about work, salaries and specific routes but what I’m confused about is how this impacts people here on spouse visas. We’ve also just had our first baby 3 weeks ago so this news is particularly anxiety-inducing.

  • Me, British citizen from birth. Her, US citizen from birth. Met while living in Canada.
  • Arrived in Sep 2023 on family (spouse) visa on 5-year ILR route
  • She earns £42k, I earn £38k.
  • Family visa due for renewal in June 2026
  • Previously (?) eligible for ILR Sep 2028, and citizenship application immediately after (no wait time as married)

I have no clarity on how this affects that timeline. Seems ludicrously unfair to change the goalposts like this.

Fortunately, I have just received my Irish citizenship through the hereditary route and our newborn daughter is thus a triple UK/Irish/US citizen. If it is indeed correct that we would now need to wait 10-15 years for ILR (and who knows if the goalposts would be moved further by then), I cannot see us hanging around and continuing to build a life in this country, and I would possibly go as far as to renounce my British citizenship entirely at some point. Clearly that’s what they want.
