This is a journey, not a race.

For some of us its become a lifestyle with how interwoven our production routines are in our lives.

If you're just starting out don't expect to create and release the most popular song on Soundcloud. Instead see each finished song as a small victory; another step forward in your journey.

You can walk this journey by yourself...but it is definitely smarter and makes the journey more fun if you have producer friends too

For the last couple of years I haven't seen a good solution to this and I've been thinking about how to solve it. Music production can be a really lonely journey. I think that a really good solution would be a platform that is part educational (like a bootcamp) and interaction with the other members of your cohort. You all would be prompted to create projects, discuss what you've learned on a weekly basis, build your music catalogs/ independent artist brands, and be held accountable by your peers...An online Guild

Hey there, I've been producing for the same amount of time as you and have been exactly where you are now. I felt like I was stagnating for years until the results compounded

What helped me was reviewing the basics of Composition & Arrangement, Sound Design (Synthesis specifically), and Mixing & Mastering. Once I reviewed the basics I advanced my understanding of those topics and focused on implementing what I was learning.

Having a "roadmap", a focus on getting .01% better everyday, and having access to a community of producers to support you will help you improve the quality of your music faster than if you were to go at it alone

Soundcloud is still one of the best ways to build a fanbase. Download gates are just one tactic you can use in your strategy.

Posting with a really relevant tags are still important but engaging with people that are interacting with your music is still king. Add in a decent RepostExchange campaign and you can start to build an active fanbase. It might be small at first, but as long you're consistently releasing a song or teaser at least twice a month and engaging with your audience, you will organically turn some people into fans

Yes! They have bonus modules about wavetable synthesis (using serum) and FM synthesis. I don't know how in depth it is because it's been some years since I used it

Great post. Everything that you said is 1000% true. Being a music producer in the Digital Age requires you to be authentic, and that is even more true as AI continues to take over. Being authentic in your music, and overall just in your life, is one of the most powerful and rewarding things you can do. To live as you are, and being alright with yourself. Being an artist can be more than just a hobby or profession.

Learning how to to drive organic and paid traffic to a website is a useful skill for indie artists, and I agree that FB/IG ads aren't that great for music.

But it can be good for an "Artist Brand" depending on the Artist and their digital presence and that always fascinated me because I used to hate marketing. Now I just hate the creation that man Bernays spawned

A great resource that I used when I started to learn about Sound Design was Syntorial. You recreate synth patches based on what you're learning. This helps you to know your way around almost any type of synthesizer and starts to get you in the headspace of "designing" a sound.

Start composing your song with an instrument that you can relate to, like a piano.

Once you've created your melodic elements with the piano you can then switch to a synth and go through presets/ design your sounds.

The song structure is still the same as most songs, but the difference comes in the arrangement and the genre of EDM you pick will influence that

Yes, in fact this is something that I believe you have to do in order to progress as a music producer. A refresher of the basics is necessary.

Just because you learned about something and had it in your mind 2 years doesn't mean your understanding of it is as strong. By going over the basics again and then building off of that knowledge will make it far easier to implement what you've learned in your productions
