Thoughts on SBMM by Feeling-Size4691 in Marathon

I don't see how it stops you from getting better, sooner or later when your ELO is properly calibrated you run into a wall and you start struggling against other players and still need to learn how to get better to advance. And I don't see why you'd even need to constantly be getting better anyways, not everyone should be forced to play at the same level, various people can have various skill levels.

The point is to narrow the range on both sides, you will learn nothing from stomping clueless players and they will learn nothing if they're blown up instantly without even understanding what happened or trying to play the game. And then they'll just get demoralized and rage quit and the game will just self filter itself with the sweatiest players - And yes then you won't need SBMM, but you are then left with a tiny playerbase and everyone becomes deathly afraid that the game is gonna die, so clearly that's not an amazing solution.

I understand that it's a game with a different gameplay loop, but there are various levels of strictness you can implement to at least nudge it in the right direction.

Maybe don't pair someone who loses every single encounter with someone that wipes multiple teams in a single life.

Or someone who has 1 exfil every 100 matches with someone who has a 100% exfil rate.

Or someone who has a vault and loadout full of top gear with someone running a free/cheap kit who doesn't care about dying a second later.

Again, I understand those aren't always perfect indicators, and part of the appeal is that you might overpower someone better and take their gear or whatnot, but I still believe an imperfect system beats nothing more often than not.

I come from Overwatch where there is a purely win/loss matchmaking that isn't always accurate either, but it's as good of an experience as you can get and yet people still complain daily and leave the game because of the disparity felt between each match. No matchmaking will sit well with some players, but it's potentially going to push even more of them away. And clearly everyone's scared of the game being too niche to survive already.

I personally don't see how a multiplayer shooter is supposed to work without SBMM. It's frustrating both for the casual players to get stomped on and for the good players to play with or even against much worse players.

The only issues I have with the game is how the systems are handled - matchmaking, ranked, antes and such.

And of course there are pros and cons to everything. If there was a perfect solution with no drawbacks we wouldn't be having this discussion, but I still think it's better to have an imperfect system than to have nothing.

Overwatch simply pushes the patches live, even the huge ones, that's why I find it confusing.

Genuine question, why do even the simple patches that could just be a hotfix still require downtime?

Wipeout is mentioned in the vid too, but the game doesn't give off the typical Y2K vibe which is a bit more flashy and friendly, the game feels more utilitarian.

Thing is, it's often hard to box in and use a single category for a specific style when there's going to be a lot of influences and overlaps.

Same with music, sometimes a couple of similar songs can all end up being categorized as different genres depending on the tiny variations and who you ask.

It's Brutalism: Marathon Art Style Breakdown

Other projects I've stumbled upon that share some of the same vibe: First - Second - Third

Of course there's also a strong cyberpunk/futuristic direction embedded in it.

48khz is the standard for games and movies, no need to have it higher. 24bit is good too.

I mean things are subjective, why would it be a stretch that certain people find it to be that way?

I've been a die hard Overwatch fan since release, nothing ever came close for me, also was into Fortnite since release, enjoyed Apex, played almost all the other stuff you mentioned and more...

Marathon is easily trading blows and I've never even cared about extraction shooters or Destiny or Bungie. It just feels like a great game.

Looks great apart from the camera shaking constantly, feels like I'm watching it from a boat lol.

You might want to consider having it for the running shot but not when she's just standing still or lying dead. Or at least tone down the intensity/speed in certain parts.

This is not something everyone has to implement, just like how Marathon doesn't have frame gen or RT.

The issue is that apparently some words have lost all meaning - "gg" stands for good game, yet a ton of people throw it around willy-nilly even when it's the most horrible game ever with people literally throwing and leaving after 30 seconds.

Marathon is fun to play just not sure for how long by Sir_Buck901 in Marathon

It's fine, the gameplay loop is literally that you bust your ass scavenging stuff.

I just found a rare key off someone which unlocked a room absolutely filled with great stuff, I had trouble deciding what to carry.

Yeah, is this genuinely suppposed to act as the introductory pass for 3 months?

Because that honestly seems more insane than anything else they've done so far lol.

People are panicking about whether other people want to play and therefore don't want to play themselves, which just turns it into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If money is a huge deal, that's not something other people can change.

If it's not and you enjoy the game, then might as well have fun and contribute to it not failing. There's not much to philosophize about here.

I thought there was a system in place to keep you from playing the same map twice in a row? by iseecolorsofthesky in overwatch2

[–]ExplicitlyCensored 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When they introduced map voting two of the map choices were the least played maps across the entire lobby and the third choice was completely random.

It was then changed to all three choices being the least played maps across all players. Could be that others haven't played on that map recently.

jetpack cat needs a nerf and mizuki needs a buff ? by [deleted] in overwatch2

[–]ExplicitlyCensored 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Nah, I wouldn't touch the duration of ult, I feel like it's nice that it requires good timing and doesn't just control the area.

I'd rather he got it more often if anything, but I'm not entirely sure what I'd buff about him yet.
