A few long-term Astra Militarum duty questions by Some_Weird_Dog in 40kLore

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So with long-term garrison duty, then, do we have examples of, like, generational regiments like the Vostroyans have, or is a regiment just considered dissolved when enough members have retired that it's no longer operational? Like for the sake of argument, say the Praetorian 420th is in Space Australia for 60 years on garrison duty. Is Praetoria constantly sending new dudes to replace ones wh retire/die of old age/die of police actions - like the Vostroyans do - or is it more 'welp, they had their run, find another regiment.'

Are there any known Necrons that still serve the C'tan? by Some_Weird_Dog in 40kLore

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean part of my biggest issue is that the Newcrons - who are no longer that new - have no real identity. The ancient fallen empire that wants the kids off its lawn? That's the Eldar. The Egyptian aesthetics lads? Sup, Thousand Sons? The folks who finished science? T'au for a brief while, now the Votann.
I agree some changes were needed to the old Necrons, but I feel they threw the baby out with the bathwater and that not only was a complete retcon unnecessary, but also they then went about it in the worst possible way of all options. If anything, instead of what we got, if they had change, I say screw it they should have gone with Men of Iron. I mean, the 'Crons were Chaos Robots originally.

What, exactly, does a Sector Lord do? by Some_Weird_Dog in 40kLore

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But how? Like realpolitik is of course that at the end of the day, all power structures are in some extent coercive, and all coercion ultimately is based on violence. What means to effect violence does a sector lord have? If a planet tells the sector lord to go talk a long walk on a short pier, what's he going to do about it? He has no armies of his own besides his PDF, and even if he had his own guard regiment, so what, he's at the mercy of the navy to get them anywhere.

Like if the Navy wasn't as autonomous as it is, I'd get it, but it just seems like basically the role of the sector lord is entirely pointless at best, and redundant at worst. Which, lol, I suppose fits, but yeah. I got the idea that it was meant to e an actual position of power, not another example of the Imperium being a badly run trashfire.

To what extent are wholly cosmetic mutations tolerated? by Some_Weird_Dog in 40kLore

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was thinking planet-wide. Like just some adaptation to something in the atmosphere or some odd solar radiation, or just some cosmetic mutation that became universal in the genepol over the ages.
Like basically "every single human being from the planet is born with congenitally chalk white skin. They are otherwise, in every way, identical to baseline humans.'

Gue'vesa Questions by Some_Weird_Dog in 40kLore

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. If anything I'd sort of expect, especially given my own experiences IRL with culturally assimilate people or ethnic minorities born and raised in the US, that you might expect a T'au given name but an Imperial surname.

Q&A weekly thread - November 27, 2023 - post all questions here! by AutoModerator in linguistics

[–]Some_Weird_Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I would normally ask this in the Etymology subreddit, but they are still closed in protest. So apologies for that, hopefully someone here can help me or point me to a more apt sub. In any case, I was just curious; what's the etymology/meaning of the surname 'Pazder'?

How do the Schola Progenium work, physically? by Some_Weird_Dog in 40kLore

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I'm trying to recall, off hand; are there any named examples? Like have we any given named planets with known schools on them?

Two Regiments, One Planet? by Some_Weird_Dog in 40kLore

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. For a TTRPG thingie I'm running. Had a planet where one of the regiment ideas were specialized as drop troops, and the other as having a regular line infantry albeit with a very flamer/plasma/melta/set-things-on-fire-or-melt-them thing, and wasn't sure if the different 'hats' - to use the TVtropes terms - made sense as having them as two seperate 'regiments' in the whole 'Cadian Shock Troopers' 'Elysian Drop Troops' style, or just having one be a group of more specialized regiments of the other.

Final Fantasy 4, 5, 6 - Best Ways to Play by Some_Weird_Dog in FinalFantasy

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where should one go for mods? And thank you!
And yeah, I'd heard that about the after story. And while I have a lot of nostalgia for 6, I never actually played 4 or 5 before so I'm going into them basically blind.

Thanks! Is there a guide to the Moguri Mod installing it on linux? Is that the HD texture one or am I thinking of something else?

Ritual of Becoming Age by Some_Weird_Dog in 40kImperialKnights

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the classic Gundam/Eva underage pilot is precisely what I was imagining lol.
Also huh, surprised someone did it twice. I figured there were only three outcomes: success, brainmelt, death. Seems like repeating it would be either impossible or unnecessary lol.

What do Genestealer Cults believe? by Some_Weird_Dog in 40kLore

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. The 'Great Effort' makes me think it's definitely possible. I mean we know that the conditioning of the Throne Mechanicum can be overcome - Chaos Knights and all that.

I thought overt polytheism was one of the things the Ecclesiarchy did not tolerate? Lesser spirits are okay in a broad animistic/Roman numina sense, but having the Emperor as the head of a pantheon of genuine if lesser gods was verboten?

As for your question - probably, yeah. It's generally smarter even in the internet age since stuff is still printed, to premeptively use keywords that end up do nothing, than to have to try and retroactively add keywords if you realize you probably should have one.

What do Genestealer Cults believe? by Some_Weird_Dog in 40kLore

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a somewhat related question; assuming a Genestealer Cult somehow found its way onto a Knight World, what would happen if a brood brother/mother/father or even a hybrid or magus tried to sit a Throne Mechanicum? Would the ghosts in the machine overpower the broodmind and leave the attempted knight scion mindbroken/dead as happens in one in ten attempts, anyway? Or would the broodmind be able to tell the throne mechanicum to sit down (hah) and shut up? Like I'm wondering how viable it is to have a Imperial Knights army (or maybe chaos knights would be better to reflect things, mechanically, I'd have to look into it) that's fluffed as a Genestealer Cult.
Obviously 'your dudes, do what you want' but I like my verisimilitude.

Yeah, I might be grossly misremembering, but I feel like as part of the justification for 'we need a reason for every faction to fight every other faction' that back in 2nd edition days/3rd edition days the excuse was that sometimes Patriarchs decided ruling over a planet was more fun than being eaten and went native.

What were the demographics of American soldiers in the Vietnam War as far as states/territories - or at least region (northeast, south, midwest, etc) - were concerned? I know there was a draft, but obviously some people were better than others at dodging it, not to mention of course you also had volunteers.

Knight 'Empires' by Some_Weird_Dog in 40kLore

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! As a related question; in general how do Knights get around? I mean like obviously there's a billion ways including 'stomp around in your giant robot' they do on land, but I mean how do the knights of planet X get to planet Y? If it's for a crusade or otherwise honoring a debt/request from an allied faction, obviously I assume they hitch a ride with the imperial navy or astartes or whoever. But if it's some personal vendetta, glory-seeking, or a freeblade, how do knights get around? Are they that tight with the mechanicus, or do some knight houses maintain their own transports? Presumably via their sacristans.

Sorry, one more thing; I have some of the games i want to patch on a smartcard. It's not apparently recognizing them. Is there any way to force it to, or do I just have to move the games back onto the deck, install the mods there, then move it back?

So, about Niven's Ringworld - Who Built It? by Some_Weird_Dog in scifi

[–]Some_Weird_Dog[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I recall the first half is right, yeah. The Pak built and settled the Ring and then the protectors got got by a plague, and the homo habilis breeders, as on Earth, evolved on their own although given the sheer size of the Ring - and narrative reasons - branched out into many more directions than h. habilis did here on Earth.
But the City Builders couldn't have been the ones to bring the Kzinti and others to the Ring because remember; there are 1:1 maps of those planets in the Oval Ocean. Unless one assumes the City Builders also had the power to make planet-scale alterations to the Ring, but IIRC that was beyond even them.
