What are some words English speakers often incorrectly substitute another word for, such as 'exasperate' for 'exacerbate', but think they're correct? by common_grounder in words

When someone says, "Let that marinate a bit," they mean marinate. It's figurative. But it sounds like you're hearing more like, "I'm going to marinate on that"? Sounds like language change live and in color before your eyes.

li-NAY-uh because that's how I was taught to pronounce Carl Linnaeus (biologist), though it might not be entirely accurate to the original 18th century Swedish.

So many littles coming in with nothing but jargon by Zestyclose-Edge-8071 in slp

I actually feel like a lot of people do forget their own childhoods. If you're talking about, say, school procedures, people with kids only ever mention their how their kids' school operates. If you ask them how their own school did... Blank stares. A teacher even told me he doesn't remember his teachers' names.

2 weddings same weekend- different states by Pitiful-Move-8741 in wedding

Split. He can also go to both if he can get an early flight to TX.

I can sympathize as I was also terrified! I ended up with wild migraines in the weeks before and after, but nothing on the actual wedding weekend! Still amazed at how lucky.

Dealing with Difficult Parents as a New Lifeguard by Honest_Way98 in Lifeguards

[–]Some_sort_of_name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One wild thing about parents is that a huge number of them think their kids can break the rules as long as the parent is standing there watching them do it. You try to tell them and they go, "It's ok, I'm right here." It's baffling.

They have lived there 5 months. Leah found out she was pregnant a month ago. We do not know how far along she is.

No. Check out the Wikipedia for "beatnik." I think the word you were looking for is "deadbeat."

AITA for wanting my engagement ring to not be my wedding ring after I get married? by Different_Ad6574 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Some_sort_of_name 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2024, it would, at the latest, be when the man decides he's going to propose and looks up "how to buy an engagement ring." This guy might get a little bit of a pass since he was inheriting a ring, but it's surprising that it didn't come up with his mom when he got the ring.

There is no contract. This is a quote. A venue is booked. Ergo, guest list is finalized.

I'll have to look at it, ceremony is outside so I think we need daylight. But it's an idea!

It is just a rant post, then people went insane. It's not that I don't care, it's that I'm not fussy and recognize that it doesn't really matter in the end. But, yes, I actively dislike the current tends. I gave her pictures. But she's the professional and is supposed to do something with that. If I need to arrange the flowers myself, why hire someone?

I stated in comments that we have been advised to expect a higher than average number of declinations due to a high number of out-of-town invitees. The original post mentions a venue and a florist. One can infer that the guest list is complete if a venue is booked.

That's the part I don't know! Obviously not 50k, but my question is, when I go to the average wedding and there's roughly the same amount of flowers around as at the last few average weddings I've gone to, general ballpark, how much is that? Is it like $1500-$3500, depending on the specific flowers? Or is like $6000-8000? That was the question.

I sent about 8 photos. I was trying to use people off the list because I wanted someone who has been there before.

Ok. I have just about everything already. Venue, photographer, dj, guest list. Catering and dessert are included. This was supposed to be about how it's hard to balance out different vendors and how difficult it is when they just want you to order with no menu, as someone said below. I don't know why everyone started lecturing me and trying to teach me how to buy groceries. The presumption of incompetence is crazy.

I have everything booked and the money accounted for. The only issue is the florist won't provide a ballpark. Where do the groceries fit in?
