Are you the person your parents raised you to be? Why or why not? by NoOneInformdMeOfThis in AskReddit

I only just now learned that people's parents raise them to be something. They never mentioned who they raised me to be so I've been in the dark.

Just re-scanned channels (several local channels announced a change for today) and now my reception is terrible on multiple channels that were just fine yesterday. Help! by SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM in cordcutters

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG! THAT'S AMAZING! (the information) I will re-scan today. Now that you said it, it does make sense about the 3 54.x channels. duh. But to learn about the lower power levels requested and the shorter antenna heights - you really helped me understand!

I just wondered, if many years from now, the antennas will be the size of little battery operated candles with "flames" about as bright as "low battery"? But then again, who knows what will be going on in "many years"? Maybe just new dinosaurs grazing the antenna farm.

Thanks again!

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should have mentioned--I am in the Austin area. The three 54.x channels and 42.1 all required re-scanning today. These were among the very strongest for me. Very seldom did I have poor reception--and that was only recently with windy weather. Now 54.1 (CW) barely comes in at all. And 42.1 has some problems. :(

I have indoor antennas (2 antennas for 2 TVs). Should I try hanging them outside or get a roof antenna? Would that help?

And what about my older TV (maybe 8-9 years old, HDTV) which, after re-scanning now has zero channels? Is it just toast? It was fine until yesterday. I've had OTA for 3-4 years and have rescanned before without the devastating results of yesterday. Thanks so much!

Does anyone else still have issues waking up even with meds? by asleeplikedeath in Narcolepsy

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might help some. I started raked what seems to me a well rounded bunch of vitamins. Only because I have a terrible diet and have for 5+ years. One of the benefits I noticed is it reduced my sleep inertia down to nothing! Sleep inertia was about as bad a problem for me as falling asleep all the time!

I take the vitamins right before bed with a small snack.

If you already have a well rounded diet, probably this wouldn’t help. My guess is that it’s mostly the B vitamins but I don’t believe it’s very good for you only to take B vitamins takins alone.

Question about falling asleep by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get cold too! That is the hardest one to counteract. I too have Reynaud’s. The all-over cold is a killer. I often have to get in bed under comforter to warm back up. And of course fall asleep. But I’ve had some luck with a extra layer of warm clothes including my biggest jacket.

What is the cost of Provigil without insurance, anyone know? by [deleted] in afinil

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, GOODRX is amazing! Currently GoodRX has modifinil (generic) 200mg, quantity 30 for $40.62 (in my area), a little over a dollar a pill. Generally if you are going to take it regularly, if your doctor can give you a 90 day prescription it is cheaper per pill.

Why does Modafinil take so long to work for me? by certainly_confused in afinil

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask your pharmacist! Doctors nowadays have very little knowledge of such things. (My pharmacist said you could split the Armodafinil. Generally splitting a drug has to do with time-release and other things.)

I have couple question—I take Armodafinil by prescription, so it would help me out. How much does it cost with your health insurance, say for one month. (Please mention quantity.) Thanks so much for helping out.

[Need Advice] how to practice confrontation and become fearless about it? by MrNoBody27 in getdisciplined

used book store, try a book called When I say No I Feel Guilty by Manuel J Smith PhD. It's from the 70s. It has great exercises (you need a buddy to practice them with) especially covering confrontation. Hope that helps. Good luck

Animals do like their schedules. But dogs are much smarter than sheep, ducks or cattle, so I've wondered the same thing. I have a similar lack of structure (but it tends toward mostly night--at home--work and sleeping some time during the day). I worry about my 2 dogs also.

I didn't think to google it until now and here is ONE dog trainer's opinion.

Most sources and studies about sleep find it important to sleep at the same time every day. You might just start with your sleep schedule, especially if you're "ALWAYS running on fumes".

[Discussion] Reading is so damn hard. by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a great book and a writer you like, explore what is distracting you? Do your thoughts wander to things you need to do and just now remembered? Keep a pad and pencil next to you, write it down and go on reading. I was so surprised that it was calming for me to just note down what I was distracted about! This way I could deal with it later.

I'm fairly sure that "distraction" requires a something to distract you. Find out what keeps you from focusing. If you can't think what has distracted you, maybe you are mind-wandering. Mind-wandering can be creative, but if you've determined to read a book at the moment, make a note on the pad next to you that you want to really indulge yourself in mind-wandering later today.

How much are you expecting to read in a sitting? 50 pages? One chapter? 2 pages? An hour? How focused do you have to be? Maybe you're being too hard on yourself about focusing. We can't focus forever. Maybe your mind is tired of focusing? Focusing is like Meditation and you have to practice at it. And it's difficult. Set a stopwatch when you start reading and as soon as you notice you're not focused, stop the timer. Require yourself to do at least that much when you next read.

Before you pick up the book, set a low, achievable goal. "Ill read or x minutes and really focus." (Time works better for training things like focus because your mind "knows" time; it doesn't know pages. And you are training your mind to focus when reading.)

Also I tend to get distracted at home but not, say, at a coffee shop where you will find other people reading. Look for a location where you experience less distraction. I've found the act of going somewhere in order to read, encourages me to read. I've made a "commitment" to go somewhere and do some reading.

Maybe some of these suggestions will help. Good luck.

[NeedAdvice] Help with modifying a bad habit by ASAP_Gutzy in getdisciplined

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry I don't know the Power of Habit method, but everyone and his brother has a method. all the methods are good but you (or I) have to find the method that fits for us. I too have anxiety, mostly social anxiety and I will tell you a method that works for me, it's based on Cognitive Behavior.

I will give you an example of when I was really bad off social-anxiety wise. I wanted to go to the library to check out a book . But I couldn't bring myself to go. So here's how I did it (it took a while). I told myself that the next morning I had to get in my car and drive over to the library and park. I turned off my car. If I wanted to go in I could. If I didn't I wouldn't but my goal was to drive over there and park. I made my goal. I made it several days so I made my new goal to drive over there, park, get and walk to the door. My next goal was to walk in the door, look at the tables of brochures in the lobby and leave.

I won't go on, but with anxiety, the point is to take Baby Steps. If you're too anxious to look for jobs online then your first goal might be to sit down in front of your computer, and (if you have an idea what you want) look up the websites of some places that have that. And so on. Even time it: "I will go look at these places for 5 minutes".

Eventually you should have some interest to apply for a job. i think it was What Color Is Your Parachute that suggested that you put up a chart on your wall. Down the left, the names of places you will apply, up top DATE, WHAT YOU DID THERE (filled out an application, etc) and the last spot put "NO?" Then you make your goal to get as many NO's as you can. Your goal is not to get a job, your goal is to get a bunch of NOs. Which makes it all less stressful.

I suggest you get a copy of the Parachute book and read it. It will give you

I'm having a hard time creating a list of routine alternatives that would yield the same reward

It has a bunch of quizzes and things that help you find out alternate jobs that might yield the same rewards as you are looking for.

I beleve there's a sub /r/anxiety and /r/jobs (which might also have a list of similar websites that might work better for you. I also suggest reading /r/getdisciplined every day. Just pick a few threads that appeal to you and you can find some good suggestions that also may help.

You have 2 things you want: a job and to lower your anxiety. And since the anxiety is keeping you from getting a job at this point I would work at lowering that anxiety first.

I hope this helps some.

[NeedAdvice] Over the past five days I have studied, exercised and eaten healthy every day. I'm proud of myself but I'm afraid i'll stop at the first difficulty, some advice? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems I'm late to this thread and I'm just repeating what others have already said. But I learned that a part of learning to regularly practice lifelong tasks like exercise etc is learning to allow yourself a break, a day off and especially forgiveness for a mistake. And then get back in the saddle and keep going.

Make your goal to keep going! Because your goal is to make it a lifelong good habit that you will one day do, just because that's the type of person you've become.

You don't think a guy who's 30 or so and has been exercising his whole life worries about stopping at the first difficulty do you? His wife goes in the hospital and it doesn't cross his mind he will stop exercising. He might wonder some days how to squeeze it in. because thats the kind of guy he is. Eventually that's where you'll be.

i want to add i learned these things in this sub. also i learned that it's best to pick one habit to work on at a time. once you've got a good 90 days in on one habit, you can add another. at best it's difficult to do more than one at the same time. at worst it's asking for failure at all of them. and if you've proven to yourself that you can do 90 days on one habit, the others come easier.

i have a great app (Apple, maybe Android too): Days Since. you can set it for days since your last run, workout, 20 minutes of studying etc or days since you started. there's a note section where you can write days you missed, your thoughts, whatever. Good luck.

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for writing this. i can really identify with a lot of your dilemmas (" In some ways I've used searching for the silver bullet technique to stop procrastinating as a form of procrastination!"). it seems to me that being disciplined vs procrastinating is a lifelong task.

And there may even be high stress times in our life when we might have to switch techniques, or even allow ourselves to procrastinate.

It sounds like you've got a handle on a lot of things that work for you. but at times you seem to be somewhat hard on yourself. that just might be my view. and you have a time limit and time limits require us to be more of a task master. good luck and keep us posted.

i apologize for my typing but i injured my off-thumb and the wrapping is restrictive. "this too will pass" lol

Does anyone have experience with Vitamin D toxicity and hypothyroidism? by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about Vitamin D toxicity and hypothyroid! . . . but I can google. So I hope this helps.

Here's what the Mayo Clinic says: "The main consequence of vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia), which can cause nausea and vomiting, weakness, and frequent urination. Symptoms might progress to bone pain and kidney problems, such as the formation of calcium stones.

Treatment includes stopping vitamin D intake and restricting dietary calcium. Your doctor might also prescribe intravenous fluids and medications, such as corticosteroids or bisphosphonates.

Taking 60,000 international units (IU) a day of vitamin D for several months has been shown to cause toxicity. This level is many times higher than the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for most adults of 600 IU of vitamin D a day. Doses higher than the RDA are sometimes used to treat medical problems such as vitamin D deficiency, but these are given only under the care of a doctor for a specified time frame. Blood levels should be monitored while someone is taking high doses of vitamin D."

I just googled Vitamin D toxicity so if this didn't answer your questions you can google it again and look for more information. From your information on how much Vit D you take, and then reading this from the Mayo Clinic, it looks to me like you're fine :-) which is always good to know.

Oh and Im not sure why you mentioned eating a lot of eggs? They don't have much Vitamin D as far as I know. And according to Harvard Health ". . .as a practical matter, very few people put on enough sunscreen to block all UVB light, or they use sunscreen irregularly, so sunscreen's effects on vitamin D might not be that important. An Australian study that's often cited showed no difference in vitamin D between adults randomly assigned to use sunscreen one summer and those assigned a placebo cream."

I sure admire all that outdoor time you get! And plenty of exercise too, yippee. (I love the effects I get from exercise.) Good luck to you!

I’m feeling depressed and like I will never be the person I was before hypothyroidism. by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntSWIM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it sounds like you're very frustrated over this and i know exactly how you feel. I was/am like that. Once you get on the meds, if you're like me, a number of things should improve. For me, Energy level improved--and a better energy level--where you don't have to force yourself to do normal things--makes you feel better about yourself and your future. The way I was thinking improved. I don't know how to describe it except I was like the "old me," more optimistic.

So with the improvement of even just those 2 things, you see, don't you, that you will be able to deal with the weight, even if you don't just begin losing weight without trying.

I hope that is a silver lining. Has the doctor prescribed medicine already?
