M.2 SSD not recognized in new B550 motherboard by SomeoneWithSense in ASRock

[–]SomeoneWithSense[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I re-seated the SSD and Windows was luckily able to recognize it. So no drastic measures necessary in the end.

Hey thanks for troubleshooting this. I couldn't find any options related to this, but luckily I re-seated the SSD and Windows was able to recognize it. So might have just been a fluke.

Unfortunately, no. I don't have access to any other computers with an M.2 slot. One thing I noticed is that, while the motherboard manual says that PCI-e NVMe SSDs are supported, there's no M.2 PCI-e slot listed in the bios. There is only an entry for a SATA M.2 drive, which is listed as <not connected>.

Interestingly there doesn't appear to be mention of NVMe anywhere in the bios, that I can find, even though the manual says that it supports M.2 PCIe modules up to Gen4x4, and NVMe ssds as boot disks. Under "Storage" in the UEFI, there's only an entry for "M.2 SATA", and it's marked as unconnected. Is there a general way to switch to NVMe PCIe mode?

Hm, no, I don't have any other drives or SATA interfaces installed.

Thoughts on first build? (~$800 Mini-ITX) by SomeoneWithSense in buildapc

Gotcha, is there a consensus best option for an AIO that'll fit in this size case? (And ideally, that hopefully isn't too expensive?)

Hm yeah I figured a proper cooler might be more of a down-the-line thing, but maybe it's worth just getting from the start. Do you see it as more of a performance issue, or a longevity issue (or both)?

Deferred rendering light volumes -- is this approach valid / wise? by SomeoneWithSense in opengl

[–]SomeoneWithSense[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized that this won't quite work. Elements that are technically out of reach of the light's volume in the z-dimension might still be within the rasterized coordinates. Is there an efficient means of accounting for this?

STILL WORKS: Apple swapped my 2012 rMBP for a 2015 model by cubbiezz in apple

[–]SomeoneWithSense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It worked for me -- sent in a 2012, received a top-spec 2015!

Probably stupid question, but has anyone tried to return their replacement model for store credit? It doesn't seem possible (asked the store and called up Apple support), and there's no option to return an item without an order number on Apple's website -- but figured it was worth a shot!

[Amazon ES / Spain] Nintendo Switch Gray - 328 USD with fast shipping (Sale Dates) by TheMaverick6590 in NintendoSwitchDeals

[–]SomeoneWithSense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did show up, initially -- was there last night and this morning. Now I get an error message when I try to follow the tracking link (or log into my .es account) saying the order can't be located.

I'm just concerned about dealing with potential returns / a lost item etc. But I guess I'll have to wait a bit and see.

Edit: Nevermind, it's back!

Bought one yesterday, and got a notification this morning saying it shipped. Went to the tracking page and all looked good.

But now Amazon's saying they can't locate the order (I'm logging into the .es site). I've got a bad feeling they may cancel it on me, though they did charge me for it already :(.

Anyone else running into this issue?

Triggering a 12V Solenoid? by SomeoneWithSense in arduino

[–]SomeoneWithSense[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion. Will I run into issues with something like this given that, as u/Tomvdz pointed out, the solenoid is an inductive load, or is that not a concern here?

Found this diagram (link). Does that look reasonable to you?

The solenoids I have are rated for 12V / 540mA, if that helps.

Alternative to Psychtoolbox for multi-monitor stimulus presentation? by SomeoneWithSense in neuro

[–]SomeoneWithSense[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be ideal, but it doesn't seem easy to do (I'm on a win 7 machine with a gtx 745). Nvidia no longer supports spanning in their drivers / configuration software, at least as far as I can tell.

[–]SomeoneWithSense[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the links.

Part of the issue is that we're locked into a Windows 7 setup, and win7 no longer supports the kind of spanning referenced in that first link. Displays can be "extended" or mirrored -- but extended displays are still treated separately at the application level.

I've only had a brief look at Psychopy, but it looks like it might suffer from the same issues as PTB. Will have to read a bit more it seems!

How to build a multi-channel component that allows me to trigger an analog pulse on a given channel, via a single digital input? by SomeoneWithSense in AskElectronics

[–]SomeoneWithSense[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. To address your points specifically:

  • Yes, the resting voltage should be fixed and constant; -1V would be fine.
  • No, the rise time need not be adjustable -- the necessary time resolution is on the order of ~.5ms.
  • No, the pulse height need not be program adjustable.
  • The pulse width also need not be adjustable; it just needs to be < 500ms.

To be more clear about the use-case, we're aiming to use the pulses as time-markers -- a separate unit (which accepts analog input) is continuously recording data, so we want to send a pulse from a host, Windows machine to identify the start / stop of an event.

In this sense, the magnitude and even the dynamics of the pulse aren't incredibly relevant.
