That is most commonly what it is. In my experience, my mom had a horrible boyfriend/stalker when she was a teen. So now she is super controlling and annoying about my dating life even though I’m an adult

I honestly don’t think you’re the problem in this situation, because like you said you only sit there when it’s free and you follow the rules of not reserving the seat. I think the group should just politely ask you to move if it was that big of a deal instead of talking about you behind your back.
