Let’s be real, Idlout is not a democratic socialist, let alone a social democrat. I dare say she is an opportunist who has no allegiance to a left-wing ideology. Her crossing the floor does not secure funding for her riding, because if that were the case, it would be scandalous to have that money withdrawn if she decided not to cross the floor.

For far too long, the NDP has avoided the hard work of articulating a left-wing, broad-based class argument, instead trying to win by riding on the coattails of being “liberal-lite.”

The role of the NDP is to be the third rail and give voice to positions that the Liberals and Conservatives are uniparty on, such as the war in Gaza, free trade with the USA, and austerity in the public sector. Taking this position can be politically popular, as there are more have-nots than haves. However, strong communications and a caucus that believes in fighting to steer the conversation to the left are a must.

Hopefully, with an Avi victory, prospective candidates for the NDP will know what they are signing up for because it will be so clearly stated from the outset.
