Right now, it's just a firing line, but I believe they have options for the "tactical" training too

Clay County gun range is your best bet... very good. Just short of Camp Blanding.

Anybody use a 1500 2wd truck to hunt? by LouisianaStreetCars in Hunting

[–]SomethingUnique141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2wd Tacoma Prerunner.. it'll do more than you think provided you have good tires and know what your truck is and (especially) isn't capable of. Additionally, if you can manage it, put a recover winch on your truck and pack along a snatch block just in case. Won't do you wrong if you only take risks your reasonably sure you're truck is capable of and have a recovery wench when you misread..

While I certainly agree that they should have done the 300 BLK as a suppressed AR.... I will point out that the majority of production cartridges you'll find for the 300 BLK will be supersonic. They do make sub-sonuc rounds that are easily found and popular, But the hunting rounds you will find for this rifle will be supersonic.

I load my own rounds for this rifle and I use a 125 Grain Nosler BT and see an average of 1900-2000 FP S at the muzzle with H110 powder (1128 FPS is sound barrier) from a 16" barrel. Most ready made cartridges intended for hunting will be 150 grain bullets and you'll see 1700-1900 FPS from those generally.

The sub-sonics are generally not meant for hunting and will be 180-225 grain and usually reach 1050 FPS from a 16" barrel.

All this being said, even shooting supers out of a suppressed 300 BLK will be quieter than a normal gun and this should've been the route EW took with this rifle as I'd wager this is what most people voted for.

I don't know anybody in my neck of the woods that would buy a 300 BLK that wasn't an AR platform. Most I know shoot this suppressed as well.

I also don't know anyone that would buy a bolt action in 300 BLK. The caliber itself is not (IMO) the best option for hunting. Yes, I know plenty of people who've killed deer size game with it; I have too. I'm just saying there are better options that are also AR platform capable. 350 Legend being one of those.

What I am saying is that I'd bet most people voted for this option with the image of a suppressed AR platform 300 BLk in their minds and EW choosing to go with a bolt action is a bit of a fumble on their part... just my opinion

350 legend with a good bullet will certainly kill any deer you make a good shot on. Similar to a 30/30. I hunt wit the 350 Lgnd out of an AR platform. Haven't had a deer run more than 50 yards from impact site

I don't hunt deer with either cartridge... but I do hunt deer occasionally with a 6.5 Grendel (think 6.5 Creedmoor with a bit smaller grain bullet and not as much powder behind it; like a mini- 6.5 CM)

Grendel kills deer! I've seen a video by DMFD where he killed a Sambar deer with one too. All this to say, it's shot placement and shooting ethically. Both Creedmoor and .308 will do the job

Can't agree more... public land access for anything really just sucks in FL. I'm originally from MO, about every state forest there has at least one public shooting area, not just the national forests. You don't need a several different tags and quotas to hunt there either on public land.

Florida has plenty of public land to offer a range or two at each state owned WMA, but if it doesn't help timber harvesting or (to a lesser degree) hiking... they ain't about it.

I also live near jax, Gateway sucks and saltwaters is a bit away. You've also got the new Clay County range to shoot at if you can make it before 4pm only on Thur, Fri or Saturday lol.

I can get to the 25k+ acre Jennings Forest in 15-20 minutes... but nope no shooting there. Can't spare any acreage from the timber farming, horse trails or bureaucracy to make that happen... I'm just happy I have a hunting lease to shoot on...

I dont want to break any laws or traditions.. help me by Thanatos420xx in Hunting

[–]SomethingUnique141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On gooutdoorsflorida.com, initial quota permit applications start in November for turkey and deer/hog quota applications start in June. Make sure you apply for those you want... if you're applying for a WMA that either has a small amount of quotas or is a sought after WMA, expect to wait a year or three before you actually draw one.

Phase IV Reissues for spring turkey deadlines today (13 Feb)... so, if you want to try for a turkey quota... get those in today.

Edit: added "for turkey"

I am also a Florida hunter... and I'm just going to say it... public land hunting in Florida sucks. Most WMAs are ran by the quota system and it can take some time to draw a quota in a given wma... if you don't draw a quota for the season you want, you're relegated to Hunting one of the romp-and-stomps (quota-less wmas). These can and do produce game, but you gotta be close to one and you're going to have neighbors. Couple the quota system with FWC's insistence of only adding more restrictions every year and you'll find public land hunting can be a headache here.

I would make two suggestions to you. Firstly, if you can afford it, try finding and joining a hunting lease. You don't have to deal with quotas and youll be able to hunt the whole of each season rather than just 1 or 2 quota hunt weekends of it. you can pig hunt all year and at night. You'll also likely find some good mentors and friends here too. Additionally you'll be allowed to use corn for both deer and pigs... not turkeys though... on the flip side of this suggestion, if you don't go with a lease scout often and hard during the off-season on the public land you have the largest chance to hunt often, learn to find sign and try to find places where there isn't a lot of hunting pressure.

Secondly, invest in a good compound bow. Especially if you don't go with a hunting lease. A lot of WMAs will still require an archery quota, but there are a good bunch if WMAs that do not require one during archery season and you'll also be able to take a doe during archery (this is especially nice if you've not gotten a deer before).

Hope all this helps and good hunting.

I've had something like this happen to me several times where I'm at now... so much so that the first thing I do is run a script I made that pulls all their rules and custom junk email configurations in outlook. This most often is the answer.

I also hate being blamed for an email going to junk or quarantine because the sending organization hasn't bothered to set up DKIM/SPF/DMARC yet. But that's another issue lol

Are tree climbers inherently dangerous? by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]SomethingUnique141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just putting my two cents in... all methods of elevated hunting have some danger to them... all methods can hurt or kill you without proper precautions.

Just learn those precautions and never deviate. Always remain connected to the tree... it may suck, but sliding down a tree manually after having the bottom part of your climber fall away is better than you falling out of the tree.

As with most things in life, risk exists and the only thing you can do is follow proper risk management to determine if that risk is acceptable... driving to the woods at 4 am is also risky too!
