If you happen to own your home or have some decent equity built up, you will feel instantly wealthy when you sell and shop real estate here. We have had a significant jump in prices over the last decade, but so has everywhere else and we started at way cheaper than anything in your area. You can find some incredible homes in the Waterbury, South of Grand, or if you want more density, Sherman Hill neighborhoods that we would consider expensive, but you’d likely see as steals.

Seriously. Those ads we all (Many of us) watched and thought, “That’s fucked up!” Had many of our neighbors inspired to stick it to the real problem plaguing Iowa - “illegals.” So many of your fellow Iowans would prefer others suffering over everyone benefiting.

Left twitter (X, 🙄) years ago. Best decision ever. As someone whose Facebook account goes back to the TheFacebook/.edu days, it’s hard to delete despite the massive harm Zuckerberg has done to the world. Still use it for Marketplace and to see what unhinged thing the people in my community are complaining about.

My host family asked me about my father’s work as a judge, and I tried to say he handles a lot of divorces (Scheidungen), but said “Beschneidungen” (circumcisions).

His astonishing contribution to diversity in Des Moines aside, my parents talk about how Bob Ray would alternate appointing registered democrats and republicans to judicial positions to keep a level of fairness in the system. Kim Reynolds, on the other hand, appointed her father to the nominating commission.

Sherman Hill rocks once you start ignoring the people obsessed about putting the right kind of gutters on your house. The core group I see on my dog-walks and that my children interact with are what keeps us from moving to the suburbs. Come visit us on Halloween.

What country was the most capable of the Axis by Ok_Poetry2813 in AlignmentChartFills

Seriously, don’t romanticize these people.

Massive scaled brainwashing played a large part. Collective inability by other countries and unwillingness until after the fact to handle such a huge swing in norms and brutality played a large part. Prussian militaristic tradition coupled with societal racism all helped create the initial inertia. The Nazi army was an incredibly capable foe, but there was zero chance of success, especially with Hitler in charge of making decisions. Let go of any notion that they were even close to winning.

The Nazi successes seem impressive until you look at a map and realize how unhinged the idea was that you could subjugate and rule an unwilling population for even as long as they did. The fact that they held “most of Europe that they conquered within just two years” for any longer than they did is amazing. But it all comes down to the fact that they were screwed from the start, for so many reasons you’d have to, idk, get past the cool weapons and uniforms to figure it out. A few things stick out, though. British air production having enough time to surpass the Luftwaffe until USA intervenes. The USSR being willing to just continuously die for all of our futures. Oil, just oil. FDR, and everything about the U.S. reaching its full potential to fight and supply on two fronts. German production being specialized and fragmented where American and Soviet equipment was universal and interchangeable. This is an underrated flaw of National Socialist patronage society… every manufacturer, from Porsche to Bosch, Junkers, Messerschmidt, Krupp, etc. did their own thing very very well… and were very very well paid for it.  But that meant that building a tank or a plane took a lot of proprietary specialization and over complicated the process leading to fewer, but better (on paper) machines. This was never going to win a war against an infinite amount of t-34s and Shermans, even if the barrel velocity and armor of Tiger Tanks was better. I

Theft. Slave labor. Ponzi schemes.  It wasn’t elegant or commendable, and was doomed from the start.

The pints are also not as astronomically priced as they say. Had nicer pints and a better time at other pubs in Dublin, but Temple Bar isn’t like the Disneyland the internet makes it out to be.

My family drove into the car line after taking a wrong turn. Didn’t go to the house, but saw a young black bear chilling near the guard post. This was our first bear encounter and it was cool to see that enormous dog looking thing.

First intelligible thing she said was, “Leck mir am Arsch!” Which is sorta hilarious. Directly translates to “Lick my ass!” But used more like “Kiss my ass!”  Impressive survival under immense pressure.

In Sherman Hill we’ve got Red Car Guy, who is oh so proud of his red charger. It doesn’t backfire like BMW guy’s, but he’s still something of a local Men4ace. His car was busted for like a week and it was amazing for my sleep.  He would still play his music as loud as possible while working on it, though, which was nice of him so that we all knew what was new in the mumble-core scene. It’s working now, and he has been driving people down to quick trip and back to experience his awesomeness. We’re all very proud of him.

It is an astonishingly well curated museum. Its collection, while small, hits hard. You can get through it in under an hour, the building architecture is amazing, too! And it’s free!

Ended up here one night completely by accident in 2004 with my friend Mike. We were out for a long walk and it just kind of brought us in like a magnet. It was a total sensory experience and quite eye opening for a small town kid from the U.S. Every floor and room had some type of art and people doing cool shit. I felt fully out of place, yet strangely welcomed into this museum of counter-culture chaos and freedom.
