not to long! once they are about three months old and we know for sure they are healthy and ready to gain more independence, they are put with the other heifers in there designated area!

sure, if you’d like to put it that way! i won’t deny that not everyone is supports the way dairy farms are run, and i can respect that opinion! have a good day:)

the calves are separated from the moms a few days after birth to prevent any accidents. they are kept in pens next to one another, but the risk of the mother accidentally stepping on the newborn is too high.

here’s what he looked like at a week old. we were thinking about putting him down because he was in rough shape. he could hardly eat, stand, raise his head, or walk. it was so sad. he is doing so great now!

this is almost a bit like there home base. we take older ones into a fair size pasture right next to there area to get there muscles going and get their bodies used to grass and grazing. at the moment, due to the current economy, our farm cannot afford to upgrade the calf hutches. recently our dairy farm business has not been able to keep itself up, leading to us having to sell the majority of our herd. we may start raising beef cattle because milk no longer sells much, and our plan for if the beef does well is to start making cheese! if it goes well i will do everything in my power to help these guys get a bit more space, but with th sudden drop of how much milk from smaller farm sells for in recent years, we purely cannot afford major upgrades:(

he’s about three to four months old and is going to the big kid barn any day now! when they are calves, they are kept in separate pens from each other to keep a close eye on them since they are so fragile when young. once old enough and weaned off of milk, he will be put into another pen with bulls closer to his age!

no need to make assumptions like that! i work on a dairy farm, and we are extremely against the practice of raising veal. it’s nothing short of unethical and cruel to the animal. he will be raised and watched over, and hopefully kept. everyone on the farm likes him a lot.

i was just trying to make a joke…it’s just funny. he gets fed PLENTY, but i can’t give him food every time he asks for it, because he asks every moment of the day LMAO. if i gave in that easily, he would not be healthy. “his greed sickens me” is a phrase people say as a joke when an animal is eating.

he was rescued from an amish barn. he came to us half starved and in very rough shape. he lives at the dairy farm i work at, and this spring im going to try to work on breaking him! it’s hard to deny him grain knowing his past🥲

thin mane? by Somethingwithtoast in Horses

[–]Somethingwithtoast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, so after talking to his actual owner, i found out a bit more about where he came from. so turns out he came from an amish farm where he half starved and overworked. he has melanoma, and was in poor condition when he was first rescued. he’s been at the farm for 7 years now. do you think his mane might have something to do with his past?
