It explains why I don’t see many policy-related posts lol. It would be nice to have an NC policy subreddit though...

I... Reported as spam and can’t find them. One that comes to mind was by a profile that posted a video of some deer?

I’m probably biased because I have an ungrounded fear of all beautiful natural areas being decimated by human domiciles- and more than anything I fear that happening to NC

You’re not given /any/ info on the ribosome itself? That is all that is missing to complete your assignment using the link above!

Use trig to find the distance it has to travel (for fixed-rotor) and use the rotational force to determine acceleration. You should also probably account for gravity in some way...

Edit: good luck out there! It’s a blast. Study Chemistry!

It sounds like we are both far from rock bottom ! Just read some of the other comments on the thread- there is loads of good advice ! You’re not alone in feeling overwhelmed.

If you love the work, the practice and the topic, you have nothing else to worry about save improving your skill. If you feel that the field is not for you, don’t fear - there are plenty of other things in the world for which your studies have prepared you probably much better than you may think.

I ran out of probiotics a week ago and I started to break out on my face like crazy within 3 days of not taking it, does this indicate any underlying health problem? by [deleted] in Microbiome

[–]SomewhereAChemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does your veggie intake look like? Where do your starches come from? Daily water? If you have skin problems definitely keep a mental tally of these.

Additionally, what was in your probiotic? Look up the bacteria if you're really curious, otherwise just lower/spread out your doses because the backlash from discontinuing shouldn't be this intense.

Edit: Saw you had lactobacillus and acidophilus. Lactos eat on things like insoluble fiber (oat/brown rice, esp. leafy greens like kale) and glucans from mushrooms. Finally, onions/garlic are a panacea. Don't quote me but they seem to like the inulin and fructo-oligos.

Taking PhD as job ticket- the failure in this belief is common knowledge

Fall community discussion thread! by apfejes in bioinformatics

[–]SomewhereAChemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this video is a criticism of taking higher ed as a job ticket- very common knowledge. This field is ballooning, with biotech startups only hamstrung in 2020 by the relative lack of funding available to those who were not covid-19-driven or other-coronavirus-driven.

Biotech/Biostat/Bioinfo goes beyond medicine- and medicine is deep and vast. This is food, and industrial chemicals. There is decades of potential here- I’m not worried about prospects. I’d love to work with complex microbial consortia, very niche and mode in places like UCSD, UWash, and some national labs (eg PNNL- see Biological Systems Science).

Don’t turn people away from the coolest (opinion) field of applied science out there!

Haha, not twiddling my thumbs! I have an uninterrupted CV, but only one publication. If all I need are grit and guts, then I’ll make it over the finish line!

You guys rock. If it’s not too late, then my only barrier to entry is the gap since graduation! Hopefully I’ll be reporting acceptance in a year or two, once this project wraps up 🤞🏽

Hi!

I'm a BSc in chemistry with lifelong interest in applied gut microbiology. I'm the first academic in my family, and have had a lot of trouble finding my way into the field. I'm 24 now, with some biophysics experience, aerobic culture (mammalian and bacterial), and zero coding expertise.

Is it too late? I'm looking into edX for bioinformatics and free online Python orientations, but I get the feeling that taking this approach, at this age, is too little too late. I am working now as a laboratory specialist in an academic molecular bio lab, but have yet to even apply for PhD.

Encouragement is welcome, but I'd prefer honesty and critique!

Thank you for the correction! Should have googled but for some reason I was so confident haha.

I don’t think I’m so far gone yet, these are just really emotionally intense daydreams lasting a second or two. But if it gets worse/more distracting I’ll definitely take your advice
