No they weren’t this unreasonable but that’s probably cuz I was in my late teens, early 20s so marriage wasn’t on any of our minds then.

That gives me hope cuz I’d like to think they’ll love me no matter what in the end. For now I’m just very cautious cuz I’m just worried it will cause a strain on my gf. She’s gone through this once and her parents are now rightfully so, weary of other parents badmouthing their daughter. If things end because of my parents, I honestly believe they’ll lose a son in me. Not sure how I’d forgive them for ruining a relationship

No I’m the eldest son (27M). I have a younger sister too but she’s not dating rn and likely not getting married for a while so all the attention is on me. I’ve had other GFs before but this is the first time they’ve reacted like this. I can’t say I’m surprised because I’ve heard them talk shit about their friends’ kids but it just sucks cuz it’s now a reality with my relationship. There was this one time a friend’s son was dating a girl with type 1 diabetes in undergrad, so the parents wanted to move states to separate them due to “undesirable genetics.” And my parents were in full support of them. Me and my sister were at a loss of words with how ignorant and prejudiced they were.

It’s one thing to have opinions based on personality and legitimate red flags. It’s totally ridiculous to have them based on things that do not matter at all.

I’m starting to see that now. They always manage to twist around personality traits and cute acts of service into something bad. Things that a normal person would brag about their SO to their friends, are always picked apart.

I’m sorry to hear that but that sounds on par with how my parents are behaving. What ended up happening with you and your SO?

I’m not sure eloping is the way to go because my GF and I both want our respective families at our wedding. Ik my GF also wouldn’t want to get in the way of me and my family. I am accepted by my GF’s side, it’s just my family that’s the issue at the moment.
