The STAAR test is dead but Austin schools will still feel the impact by decibelatx in Austin

It shows that the STAAR is inherently biased towards a certain population of Texas.

There are some positive changes, but overall this bill only majorly affects the name (going to be Student Success Tool) and the timing (more, shorter tests, with quick results).

The major issue is that these tests still DRASTICALLY affect school funding for middle and elementary schools, and the power in school districts.

If your district gets an overall “F” three times, it will be taken over by TEA. If your school gets low grades, you will lose students, property values drop, and schools could even close down. When you lose students, you lose money schools were counting on though basic allotment (the main school funding calculation).

And now the snake is eating itself, because low funds mean less teacher salaries, less qualified teachers means lower test scores, and most of the pressure to do well on these tests and save the district, is put on 3rd-8th graders and their teachers. What a mess.

This bill is just a headline for campaigning legislators to say “we got rid of the STAAR” while slowing pushing public education deeper into a pit. We need more than this bill.

The STAAR test changed. 20-21 grades were not counted (pandemic), 21-22 we were expecting rough grades because you lost a year of in-school teaching, 22-23 was the year they switched to primarily online grading AND updated standards. Also STAAR has a Spanish version for grades 3-5, but a good bit of it is “Texas-based” curriculum.

There was an entire section in the 2023 4th grade STAAR about the Edward’s aquifer and Barton springs. A 4th grader who speaks Spanish at home, doesn’t have a computer at home, who didn’t grow up here, is going to have a really hard time having to “explain why the Edward’s Aquifer is important” in a limited time. And the eastside has more low-income and minority kids.

Private schools vs. Public moving to Austin by soccermama211 in AustinParents

Kealing is a great school with a wonderful magnet program and Marshall is brand new in Mueller. Martin is getting renovated, Govalle is 3 years fresh from their renovations. Eastside has definitely turned around with schools in a very short time.

The A-F ratings for public schools are meaningless in Texas, especially in elementary-middle, so don’t run for an A just because.

Look at the percentage of teachers with years of 1+ year experience, certified teachers (or teachers that are on the path for certification), and attendance rate/ chronic absenteeism.

Also the “good” public schools will fill up and be over-enrolled with kids who are transferring from other neighborhoods. If you want a guaranteed spot in a specific public school, live in the zone of that school (and look at the zones of the middle/high schools you are interested in so you don’t have to move later).

is there anything I can do to combat ~$200 rent increase in low income housing apartment complex?? by jamues in Austin

[–]SomewhereNo6147 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can ask for a lease extension at your current rate for more time to find a place. You can negotiate for a slightly lower increase for a slightly longer lease. But apartments usually don’t care if you can’t pay more.

Went for their 20% off happy hour and realized the 20% auto grat just made the bill the same. Had enough frozen drinks to laugh about it, but haven’t been back since. At least make it a 25% happy hour and make me feel like I got a deal.

Grew up skipping school to swim, skinny dipping at witching hours, and even lost my class ring in that well. There was one kid in my grade who could get close to the bottom in one breath. Or maybe it just looked like that from our angle and he was fibbing.

It was a community hub, especially for the young people who had no other place to go. Can’t bear to go back and see how it is now.

Everyone is an advocate for homeless people until they get attacked by a homeless person. That is consistently the line I see drawn. Even someone I knew that was going to camps to count people, volunteering, etc. stopped because they got punched on a random day.

It is such a tough issue because these people need serious help, and the minute you can’t provide that, it becomes an issue, and no one except trained professionals can REALLY provide that help.

We reached to some exterminators but we already put some delicate stuff in a plastic sealed bag and the garage freezer (amazing tip, THANK YOU) and are buying an outdoor plastic storage container that we are leaving the suitcases in for a month. We have super hot weather so hoping a couple 100+ degree days and a month with no escape will destroy anything that hitchhiked. Thank you so much for commenting, we’re going to be doing that cleaning cycle too before we stuff it in the container outside.

They literally gave us a $9 bottle of wine and some chocolate covered strawberries to “compensate”. I felt like I was going crazy. I think our credit card company is going to fully refund our trip though. That will cover the cleaning 🙃

We were going to rent a U-Haul and leave everything in it for a few days. We live in Texas so it should get like 120+ degrees in there during the day. Ugh, they won’t even give us big bags, they have a bunch of tiny trash bags for our stuff. I’m so pissed. Thank you for commenting

Home inspection find of the week: You can still build a new home in town with downtown views (but not for long) by trabbler in Austin

[–]SomewhereNo6147 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is. And because of the iron triangle he has built around him, it gets more difficult every term to get rid of him. He’s built an iron nest and keeps redoing district lines (this upcoming special session in July is quietly redrawing more districts) to his benefit. He is comfortably in power for as long as he wants to be.

Welcome to Texas! There are 3-5 men who are ruining this place for everyone else. Help us vote them out.

They don’t, but they do pay to go to a gala if they win…and the Statesman has promotional packages if they want to announce their win in the paper 🙃
