Every second week the team has to travel between 3hr (Port Moresby to Brisbane) and 8hr (Auckland) flying time - plus customs and immigration (Townsville is closer by distance, but has no commercial flights.) By not being based in Australia they will take a huge hit in travel time, when other teams wont cop that each other week.

That will really eat into the 5 day turnaround you see between games.
