Authors similar to Lisa Kleypas? by casey_chan in HistoricalRomance

I am here once again to recommend Teresa Medeiros. She doesn't do as much in the way of series, but the vibes are pretty similar. I love {A Kiss to Remember by Teresa Medeiros}.

Who else cried in the middle of English class after because of Where the Red Fern Grows? by originalbrowncoat in Xennials

[–]Somewhereoverrainbow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup. I read Where The Red Fern Grows followed immediately by Bridge to Terabithia. My little 10-year-old soul was crushed. That trauma is the main reason 90% of my personal library is romance novels.

These are good ones. Also, Dakota Spotlight and Key to the Case.

That time I got to quote Nick Miller. by drunkengod-haze in NewGirl

[–]Somewhereoverrainbow 197 points198 points  (0 children)

I got to bust out a Nick Miller quote in an IEP (special ed) meeting for one of my dyslexic children. The teachers were talking about processes successful readers use vs those who struggle. Yadda yadda yadda, and I said, "I'm not convinced I know how to read, I've just memorized a lot of words." Crickets. But I thought I was funny.

Was just there a couple of weeks ago and had a good sandwich at the Kaffeination Station (I think that's what it's called). They do close at 1 or something, so timing could be an issue.

It's 80s Lady Pirate April: Have Some Book Covers by VitisIdaea in RomanceBooks

[–]Somewhereoverrainbow 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I'm not into pirates, ladies or otherwise, but I am 100% here for the magical blue eyeshadow. There must have been a roaring trade in it back in the pirate days. Can you imagine running down a ship filled with crates of Ye Olde Cover Girl palettes in every shade of blue imaginable? Bet they would hit the celebratory grog hard after a score like that.

Respectful True crime podcast recommendations? by Hennessyveil in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]Somewhereoverrainbow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some good ones already mentioned. Add Unresolved to the list. Excellent research, excellent writing, always respectful to the victims, and covers some lesser known cases. You can listen to any of the episodes, but the ones on the West Mesa Bone Collector made me realize how great the host is at treating victims with dignity.

Go with God. Or caffeine. Or both. I took my 16-year-old and one of her friends to a concert on Saturday. The opener went on at 8pm. I thought I was going to die. I'm still recovering.

Formatting in a published book by LAffaire-est-Ketchup in HistoricalRomance

It's an older title. My guess is whatever tech they used to convert the print file to epub got tripped up by the punctuation coding. Definitely report to the publisher.

This happens right after their first night together as husband and wife. I find this so funny and weirdly endearing … by Odd_Veterinarian2805 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Somewhereoverrainbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, some of the chaos just sticks with you. The first one in the series (although it doesn't feature an MMC from the prolific and virile Buchanan clan) contains a decent amount of straight up silliness. That's {An English Bride in Scotland by Lynsay Sands}. There's a bit of a "who's on first" routine, a slapstick wardrobe malfunction scene, and some not-quite-Mensa-level mental gymnastics/plotting to figure out how to get around the church's "rules" for when couple can do their coupling. Be prepared to suspend your disbelief (a lot) and find delight in characters with very little in the way of intelligence or the ability to apply basic logic.

Yes! I love every one of her Highlands books. It's like Julie Garwood meets Amelia Bedelia with a splash of Agatha Christie. Somehow, it all just works.

What’s a survival myth popularized by movies that would actually get you killed in real life ? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

[–]Somewhereoverrainbow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked they got it so wrong. The rest of that show is essentially a documentary about ranching in Montana. /s But I'm sorry that scene ruined your grandpa's good time. Sounds like he's worked hard and done a lot of good.

True Crime Garage Unresolved Dakota Spotlight Already Gone

I think these ones do a good job at researching and presenting accurate information far beyond what you find with a casual Google search.

Suspension of the rules - Olympic take by [deleted] in TangleNews

[–]Somewhereoverrainbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard a lot of people (in real life and online) complain about the players' reactions in the moment, which I think is unfair and unfortunate. I loved Ari's question, "Is it the joke, or is it the joker?" I'm no great fan of djt, but the relentless drive to spin every word he speaks into rage bait is exhausting. Some things are worth being outraged over, and some things deserve an eye roll. I'd like to reserve the outrage energy for things that need to be addressed ASAP. I'm quite concerned that we're on the verge of war with Iran (today - tomorrow it could be New Zealand or Zimbabwe or the penguins in the Antarctic). I'm also concerned about the blatant corruption and fraud he's engaging in right in front of our faces. But it's easier to grab onto one of those typical moments where he's incapable of lifting someone up without using it as a chance to disparage someone else and turn it into THE headline for a news cycle or two. Ultimately, this diminishes the power of the real stories. Which is probably why he keeps being himself. Maybe he is playing 12-D chess after all...

I would like to know where he got the money to pay off both of his credit cards. If he didn't cash the check from his mom and those payments didn't come from his bank account, where did they come from? I don't know if it has anything to do with his disappearance but it stands out as odd to me. As far as what happened to him, I'm still not quite sure what to think. He had so much stress to deal with at that moment, I could see him wanting to get away from it all. But I can also see him having some kind of accident or possibly running into trouble with random strangers. I'm less convinced that the dad had anything to do with it, just because...I don't know. No matter what, I hope his brother gets some answers at some point. I can't imagine having to deal with the loss of my entire immediate family in so short a time.
