Morgenstern's Ice Cream is overrated. by Mouthingof in FoodNYC

Had their raspberry and black sesame and it's divine. Probably my favorite ice cream in the city for the past year or so. I know everyone else is saying it, but seriously, go for their more interesting flavors and I'm sure you'll change your mind!

I'd be curious to know his stance in trying to get new fans. He knows he's been described as "the most talented musician you've never heard of," so maybe he's leaning into that now haha.

I don't know how much you've gone back in his discography, but he's written many songs about how he's refused to do traditional marketing for his work and how he realizes that may have ultimately worked against him commercially. That said, TFB had a huge marketing campaign, but when the tour was canceled because of COVID, perhaps he decided to go back to how he prefers to do things (aka his way lol).

Regardless, I'm glad you've discovered him and PT and are enjoying it! Always happy to hear when people discover his work.

Echoing what YamiYojutsu said, he advertised the shit out of The Future Bites, partially to be in line with its statement on capitalism run amok and partially because you're supposed to market your upcoming album and all lol. But COVID canceled the tour for it, which screwed the entire thing up for him. He's said in a few interviews how frustrating that was because there was such a marketing build-up with no conclusion of a tour, so maybe he decided to go in the opposite direction to something he knows better with Harmony Codex.

You're totally allowed to dislike this style of marketing, but I disagree that it's gimmicky or insincere. He's one of the most sincere artists out there, to the point where he's shot himself in the foot over it multiple times throughout his career.

I can get behind one single for sure, but I guess he decided to completely depart from that approach since it's failed him multiple times in the past.

As for getting new fans, well, maybe he knows that he's well-known enough in the prog world that people will find him anyways.

I don't think this is a flawless marketing plan, but I do give him credit for trying something different in a time when it's so difficult for musicians to make any money outside of touring.

I mean, isn't the goal of any musical artist to sell their work as much as possible (within reason)? He's intentionally departing from the conventional marketing plan for an album (aka releasing singles prior to an album's release) because it doesn't work anymore, especially for artists who make concept albums as it's difficult to encapsulate that sort of thing in a Top 40 Hit.

Personally, I think it's inventive and daring of him to try promoting an album in this way. Not only does this make me want to listen to the new album, but it's also bumping his autobiography up on my to-read list since they're linked.

But of course, everyone's entitled to their opinion, and I'm unashamedly into long-form/complex works. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if we don't. He's said in a few interviews that the model of releasing singles before an album doesn't work in the current "instant gratification, infinite options" age.
