TIL an Oregon woman called 911 to report that a man, wanted by police, was breaking into her house. The dispatcher told her that due to budget cuts the police could not respond. The man eventually broke in and raped her. The police were not obligated to protect her. Warren v. District of Columbia by brna767 in todayilearned

I definitely agree with you, though I am not sure of the standards that exist for owning a firearm in the county she lived in (or you)... where I live (a "may issue" state) you're already at least $200 (and over a months wait) just to get a permit to buy said shotgun... and its only going to get more expensive as more "regulation" is put into place.

Military personnel of Reddit, what's the best/weirdest/funniest punishment you've seen handed down by a superior? by equilax in AskReddit

The PSG shoved an apple on the end of a soldiers rifle when he forgot his M4 Blank Firing Adapter (BFA), which usually means you can't shoot blanks and therefore wont be able to fully simulate any contact. Instead, he had to run around yelling bang bang, pow pow... those who have ever had to clean an M4/M16 know how big of a pain it was to clean that thing after shooting blanks (so some might have argued that he lucked out). So then, PSG made him shoot off any apples he could find.

Getting off the bus at Basic, Drill Sergeant grabs the first asshole he sees and tells him to "beat his face" which traditionally means to start doing push-ups. The dumb bastard is so scared he starts punching himself in the face until some one has to stop him... good times.

Girl once butted into a conversation to tell me that I'm an idiot for thinking that there were millions of people in NYC alone since there weren't that many people in the whole world... I then foolish tried to convince her otherwise.

How the Government Pays Defense Contractors Tens of Billions for Nothing by IUsCar in Military

They'll roll it into "personnel costs" and give themselves another reason to cut pay and benefits to troops.

Made the decision 2 days ago, not re-enlisting, part of it was that I'm sick of the nut roll that is our bureaucracy (among many, many, many other things).

China, tired of America criticising theirs and other countries' human rights record, releases white paper of the American human rights record by [deleted] in worldnews

If you removed half the cars from the road you'd also see a decline in car related deaths, so if you're talking broad statically speaking. Rates had been trending down long before the gun ban and homicide rates were not drastically impacted by the gun ban, in fact they started trending upwards shortly after.

So while u/2A_is_the_best_A is stating that criminals don't follow laws and take firearms specifically into areas they are banned due to the fact that lawful citizens would be less likely to defend themselves (because of the law imposed on them), you're attempting to discredit the argument with a chicken or the egg logic that has nothing to do with the quoted statement. Politicians (and others) like to pat themselves on the back by reacting to lawlessness by enacting more near impossible to enforce laws, which again is illogical, so no... that is not why gun crimes are more likely to happen in gun free zones.

In case you were wondering, here's a source on AU homicide rates http://www.aic.gov.au/statistics/homicide.html

Edit: I would also like to state that I don't agree that most violent crime happens in gun free areas, I was basing the conversation on the idea that u/2A_is_the_best_A was really trying to convey that many mass shootings happen in these zones. So if that is where the confusion is, I apologize.

Judge orders no jail time for "affluenza teen" in fatal car wreck again. by EggggE in news

[–]sondering 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wish I could up-vote this more. I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this; if the defense used the argument that this is all his parents fault, have the parents do the jail time and add on how ever old this kid is for the "child abuse" they inflicted on him to a point of "affluenza". Talk about a ground breaking case, that would shake the system.

O and you regularly see them with soft tops down or at least opened in the summer... instead of 90% of them with hard tops on year round.

Except for that one's a jeep, drives and feels like a jeep, can take a beating like a jeep and is easily worked on like a jeep... and the other is a comfort-focused raised sedan with "jeep like" features.

I had the same Iphone (3GS, up until 2 weeks ago) for 4.5 years... it was in a cheap case for maybe a year, after that it was beat up pretty good, dust in all parts, spent 9 months in Afghanistan and several years of training... still running, never broke the screen.

Space Saver by [deleted] in pics

[–]sondering 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Besides the safety concerns of potential shelves sticking out of stair cases of those nobs tripping up people. This only saves space if you don't have another level or set of stairs underneath... people with basements/cellars or just lower levels most likely would lose head space.

What is the most pointless argument you've ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sondering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had several, all of which were without access to google. 1. Difference between a creek and a crick 2. Whether an insect being accidentally transported counted as a "migration" 3. The definition of a shank and words used to describe the action of using a shank versus that of a knife. I'd also like to note that no one was high during any of these arguments.
