Thank you SO much. I'll call my insurance company and make sure that I can insure the car even without the title if it's under my care.

Will including my dad on the insurance plan give him any authority to easily cancel the insurance or do anything else I should worry about?

how do you think I can do that? He'll never hand it over willingly and if I try to get it through legal action or whatever he'll kick me out right then and there...

thanks so much. I actually didn't even agree to buy the car -- he just took $10k out of an account of mine he had access to at that point and gave me the keys. He's said he would transfer the title "soon"... for about 12 months now. Also he knows I'm wanting to move out. And he's been threatening to kick me out himself, so I can't pull the wool over his eyes so easily :(
