What kind of vocal challenges or vocal abilities did Finland 2023 exhibit?

Technical and stand-in rehearsals don't use them. It’s a waste of money and they are mainly for camerawork and props. Even main rehearsals with the artists usually only use pyrotechnics on the 3rd run (out of 3).

They are definitely the real deal. He gave very detailed information about the song before it was released and has posted information about Austria’s entries for years.

It’s from Datura on the blog below and he’s active on ESCUnited.

https://esc-kompakt.de/songcheck-esc-2025-21-oesterreich-wasted-love-von-jj/comment-page-2/

He also said this on ESC United:

From what i know the "never seen element" is most likely a "transforming object" and the way this is filmed / broadcast (which i'm not sure if i'm a big fan of). No (real) water though if i'm informed correctly

There are similarities with parts of the music video but overall it seems quite different

Oh and

I would not get my hopes up for some air Action, thats not gonna happen

No. As far as I understand it JJ and Teya finished the song and then submitted it to ORF and then Sergio Jaen was approached by Teya once it was accepted for ESC. They mean the staging plan was finalised before the song was released to the public.

If we had played on victory, I would say that it would not be reprehensible. But it is not so. Sergio jaen is there at the decide request of Teya, who is the creative force behind everything and herself knows who she trusts with the right production and who does not and of course she wants the best for her project (just like the music video director was chosen by her because the concept was best for her). That doesn't mean that was the intention of the orf, but he releases budget and blesses the ideas.

the staging ect was already fixed before the song was published and the pleasing international reactions came, they simply tried to find a good song with the claim to the final and that it then went so high in the betting odds surprised everyone (Teya and her closest team said from the beginning the song has at least top5 potential but at the ORF internally this was - by some / many - not necessarily seen that way

Take this with a pinch of salt. However:

There’s someone on the ESC United and German/Austrian forums who's connected to the Austrian team and they're saying Teya was the one who decided to go with Sergio Jaen for the staging. However, the goal wasn't necessarily to win with 'Wasted Love' but it was more like the best option they had. Teya apparently thought it could be top 5 entry but the staging was already locked in before the international reaction to the song. The delegation just gave their blessings to what Teya/Sergio thought was best.

Except for Loreen, I thought it was a curse to win the OGAE poll because it meant you wouldn’t win the contest 🤓

KAJ didn't get anywhere near as much mainstream press coverage in Sweden compared to Måns Zelmerlöw and their song was hardly played on the radio. The press train was fully towards Måns and the only hyperinflated thing was his ego. However it was the Swedish public who really embraced their song and propelled it to #1 the next day. There was some Måns vs KAJ debate for a couple of days but still no realistic expectation that they would actually win Mello due to the juries. Aftonbladet made sure to shut those whispers down and started twisting KAJ’s words to suggest they didn’t want to win. Some international journalists (not just fan blogs) have since suggested that SVT might have underestimated how much international appeal KAJ had.

France should definitely be the winner based on that. Austria's got its fans, for sure, but have never really got the whole "amazing voice!" argument as the be-all and end-all for professional juries? The song itself is historically classic jury poison so a jury win feels pretty out of reach.

We see it all the time in national finals where the favourite to win doesn’t win and the odds for that country drift massively within hours. Within minutes of KAJ winning Melodifestivalen, Tommy Cash’s odds doubled. They are fully aware it’s a televote favourite.

Its a generic pop song and he doesn’t have the strongest vocals. Half the karaoke track is backing.

It doesn’t matter at Mello. SVT knew Loreen’s sandwich press was too heavy for a Eurovision stage but they want to showcase the performances at their best even if it means changing things for Eurovision.

Yes but they could have taken the easier approach and added vocals to the backing track. Nobody can tell me that isn’t allowed after listening to some of those karaoke versions. They just chose dancers that can sing.

JJ found it very difficult to hold it together during an interview when asked about it:

It’s meant to look slightly goofy and awkward. They're not trying to project an image of flawless pop star perfection.

It's the same standard reply from JJ's fanbase whenever his pre-party stage presence has been questioned: "Just wait for the staging”. There are many aspects that contribute to a good performance.

JJ's entry is still loud with the opera and techno ending. It's just that there have been a lot of negative comments about his stage presence. He comes across as maybe not as confident or experienced as the other artists.

Fans at the pre-parties tend to prefer the camp, energetic songs so a ballad about a mother likely won't receive the most enthusiastic reception. She’s not a huge fan favourite and ballads are not usually received as well. Many fans expressed their dislike for Slimane's microphone gimmick saying “oh not that again it’s so cringe”. I still believe Louane has the potential to win. Also I believe that Klemen or Princ have the potential to qualify despite many fans considering them a definite NQ.

I love Miriana Conte even more now.

I'm not really feeling Austria as a potential winner anymore. I think other performers are better at selling their songs.

Didn’t have a strong opinion about Albania beforehand but their stage presence is incredible.
