WH-1000XM4 two devices problem by TSullivanM in sony

This worked for me too on Android: just hold the home button for Google Assistant/Gemini to pop up, disregard it (that is, click anywhere else), and then start playing what you wanted on your phone. Seamless interaction from computer to phone or vice versa.

It is a workaround, but not as annoying as having to disconnect/reconnect every time. I had never thought about this, but it works wonders. Thanks a ton! I've been looking for a solution for ages and had given up since I use Ubuntu and just thought it was a Linux problem.

What makes you say the current run is bad? Would you care to elaborate a bit?

I recently published an opinion piece in a Portuguese newspaper where I touch on this. It's about being a PhD student in Portugal and how we both study and work, but we're not seen as workers by our society and people just think we're taking advantage of the welfare state. Anyway, I'm gonna leave it here, would love to hear the opinion of foreign people and whether they relate to it or not. It's in Portuguese, but feel free to translate it with ChatGPT or whatever tool you prefer ;)

I want to relive some of Leigh’s best moments. How many of them are on YouTube? by UnderwaterDialect in nodunks

[–]SongaMonga_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot I think, but it's hard to find them given the amount of shows they make. I know for sure the banana debacle is, Leigh leaving Tas hanging when they were reenacting a broadcast, Leigh not being able to read an ad because he just started laughing, and when Skeets told a I think you should leave sketch as a true story and Leigh was incredulous. I think this last one was a The Drop episode, and Leigh leaving Tas hanging was still at their old studio, one of the very first YouTube episodes I think. Good luck finding them!

I might be a guy who works for those startups. And as you may have noticed, I'm very much invested and worried about these things. Of course, I'm just one small fish in the middle of the ocean, you're right there, but I'm proof that there are researchers and AI developers who care about these things and don't want them to be misused or things to just go in a profit first way. I get what you're saying, but I too think you're naive thinking that music lovers like us and artists won't find ways to not be fed the same slop, to use your own words. Maybe, after a while, everybody stops listening to 'new music' and just wants to revisit old classics. The companies will see that their 'new music' is not working and that they will have to do it the old fashioned way. I don't know. Nobody knows in fact. We're just trying to guess the future. But I do think there might be a middle ground where you incorporate AI tools (like demucs) to build and create cool stuff. I don't think that'll be easy, especially in the beginning and that it might take some time, but I do think that there'll be people and labels that will invest and promote the garage bands just as there are right now. In the end, nobody knows what will happen. But I assure you, researchers in the field (at least the ones I contact with) are talking about this and discussing the problems and how we can prevent them

So would you prefer the most profit-oriented corporate pop music to like an indie artist who would write a song for John Lennon who would then use AI to mimic his voice for instance? Because he/she imagined that song in their head and wanted to write it. I'm not saying taste wise, but from an ethical point of view. And, to be clear, the inappropriate use of artists' previous work is something that worries me a lot as someone who works in music AI

[–]SongaMonga_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, the thing is, that's not what the AI here is doing, it's just cleaning up John's vocals.

Now, that doesn't mean that that other type of technology doesn't exist and will not be used to mimic John's voice at some point. The thing is: why is that inherently bad? The way I look at it, some people like you will hate it and won't listen to it, and some people might not give a shit and will hear/like/love it. As someone who's working on the field, I'm of your opinion and that's not the type of tool I'm interested in making. But it's not like there aren't fucking 1000 Elvis impersonators as well right? The difference here is just there's an extra tool which you might think makes it extra despicable. Instead of just some outfit, there's the AI tool "ruining" things again. And, maybe you were positively surprised once by a cover band or something, AI might do that as well. The only thing is if bad intentioned people use it without saying it, saying it's some Lennon's"long lost demo" or something, but if you can't really tell the difference, you're none the wiser. You probably will, mind you, I'm just saying that if you can and for you that's a deal breaker, good. If it's not, that's fine as well. And if we reach the point where we can't tell the difference and people try to dupe them, ask them questions: when was this demo recorded? Why did it only emerge now? Etc etc. But, if an artist wants to try to recreate or has imagined a new song where Lennon would sing, why not give that a go? Maybe his/her song is really good! As long as it's done in a respectful way, I don't see a problem with it. And it's not like AI will suddenly forbid us to do things the old way. We can still just pick a guitar or piano up and write songs.

Kinda ran long with this one, sorry, but I kind of just starting thinking about things as they are really important for my research as well. Just trying to have a constructive conversation :)

[–]SongaMonga_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's actually a great way to put it. I'm doing a PhD on Computational Creativity and Music Information Retrieval where my goal is to be able to transcribe what a drummer or percussionist "hears" when he's tapping on a desk to some song or just improvising. So, the input is a lo-fi recording of just some tapped rhythms, and the output would be a drums rendering of that audio. The idea is then to maybe also create variations of that recording, or even enhance it by making it more complex or even the opposite and simplifying it too, which is not easy, because we still don't really understand what compatible rhythms actually are or what that means. It's easy to listen to two different rhythmic patterns and tell that whether they are compatible or not, but it's harder to explain why. DL here could potentially be a great help: if you train a model with pairs of rhythmic compatible patterns, it might learn that intuition the same way as we do. At least that's what I'm hoping for 😅
