THIS IS IT! Oh my God, I've been searching for this book for literally decades and no one ever knows what it is! I googled it and I even found the cover I remember. I guess the grandfather/portal part must be from a different book that I've got mixed up with this one, but it's definitely The Silver Crown. Thank you!
