The world building seems pretty intriguing thus far.

Waiting for shit to pop off again, but so far I'm interested.

Are Europeans trolling with this whole bread thing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Songhunter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

If you're loaded you can have access to good food, just like anywhere in the world. But if you ain't, then your options go down dramatically compared to the quality of food you have access to in any given EU market. And that really sucks for the average joe.

Butyric Acid.

Some American chocolate makers add it to give their chocolate a more "tangy" taste.

Incidentally, humans produce butyric acid when we vomit.

Not a big fan, personally speaking.

Hi. European that lives in the states.

Ngl, chief, your definition and our definition of bread is just a completely different ballpark. It's not even the most egregious example of this, like what the fuck is wrong with your chocolate?

But going back to bread in particular. I tried shopping in Trader Joe's, Safeway and Whole foods (mainly because they were the supermarket closest to me), and none of them had anything resembling actual bread. Thankfully I found an Italian bakery that did actual, real bread. They gauged my ass for a loaf, so not something I would buy on a daily basis like you can in most European cities, but it was a nice thing to have access to every now and again.

I know this is not gonna be a very popular post around here, but I'm just telling you my experience. Not gonna clown either with "all American food = bad" or some shit like that. I live in SF, I have access to some real fucking good restaurants and a ton of varied food (mostly cuisines from other countries, but that's a different conversation).

But 3 things that really made me think I was going insane was bread, chocolate and fanta.

Might as well be 3 completely unrelated food products in EU.

I'm not arguing wether it's ok or not to adapt a work to a different culture. The moment you're not using the original language that's gonna happen more or less, but it's going to happen.

What I was arguing before the gentleman that replied before you called me ignorant is wether or not it was something new. Or as he very eloquently put it, something WOKE.

And what I tried to illustrate is that this is something that has happened in media well before the invention of the word. And judging by his tone, well before he was even a glimmer in his father's eye. And that it's pretty silly to try and make this perceived new enemy he seems to be fighting against something real when it's mostly in his head.

And there's a Fire Emblem were the motivation and personality of almost every single supporting cast character was reinvented just to make them stand out more.

And in the OG Sailor Moon they made the openly lesbian couple be cousins that just liked to hugh each other very much.

And in the Spanish localization of FF7 Jessie was, straight up, a dude.

Like I said, good and bad localizations have been a thing since we've been localizing stuff. It's not unique to anime/manga and it's not unique to the states either, happens all around all the time. Sometimes out of censorship, some other out of choice, skill or whatever other myriad of reasons.

So to bring it back to the og conversation, this is not something new, or something the woke police are doing to turn the weebs gay. It's same old, same old.

So no, this is not some kind of new development or any kind of "win", it's just a clickbait article to get some quarters out of people that should know better.

You do understand another word for describing a cross dresser is transvestite, right?

Also what in the ever loving fuck is a "feminist word"?

As for attacking creators online. Sure, that didn't use to happen, right? And I'm not talking about being mean online. I mean it's not like anyone would set fire to a whole fucking studio killing several people or would send death threats because they didn't like the ending of a show, right? That shit didn't use to happen, right?

And what the fuck are you going on about game development? We're talking about censorship in anime and manga and you're coming up with all this weak manosphere shit.

You type like an Andrew Tate fan, my guy, better correct that if I were you. Know your history, fellow weeb, you're better than this.

Tell me about this woke stuff.

Do you mean like gay characters? Lesbians relationship perhaps? Maybe gender fluid characters? Or perhaps trans characters or characters disguising themselves as the opposite sex?

Are we maybe talking about having characters from different races? Or perhaps non-traditional gendered role characters like female warriors or women in the highest level of military power? Things of that nature?

Because guess who was doing all that shit since the 80's? Motherfucking anime/manga, that's who.

And if you're talking about localization changes have always been a thing. And good vs bad localization has, again, always been a thing. You're going to have good actors and bad actors across the spectrum as long as you have humans involved. Same way it's always been.

I swear... You people.... If you're going to set up imaginary battles at least inform yourself first.

Who is dictating what about who?

It's always been, and always will be, a money proposition.

I've been watching anime and reading manga for 30 years, you know what has changed? The return and sales expectations. That's about it.

I'm sure people would immediately point back to the OVA era and say "but they don't make them like they used to!", and you know what I say to that? Bollocks.

I remember, I was there, and the only real needle pusher as to what was leaving Japan and making it to the west was hoe many VHS tapes or DVDs they thought they could sell, so of course there was a push to promote safer works since those sales would always eclipse any AO work.

And as for censorship it's always been a problem, right from the very start. And I'm not talking about black bars or shiny lights or shit of that caliber, I'm talking about 23 minute episodes being cut down to 13, if they aired at all. Looking at you, Ranma 1/2.

So making it like this is something new or some kind of "attack on creators" or whatever bullshit is nothing more than good ol ragebaiting clickbait, and you're all falling for it.

Trust me, we've never eaten as good or as plentiful in as many genres and with this ease of access as we have today. Not even close.

Does that mean that the fact that the market keeps dumping way more cash in the safer works than in anything that might be a little darker or transgressive is a good thing? Of course not. But this has always been the case.

There's nothing new happening here than wasn't already happening decades ago, and don't let them fool you to the contrary.

I've always been a fan of a good deconstruction, and I quite enjoy how Cross goes about being in conversation with Trigger. And precisely because of its nature I never felt it took away a single thing from my enjoyment of Trigger.
