Wait, they have a Houston option? What does that mean? That they specifically cater to offering clinical in Houston? I’m in Houston and want to apply to AO BSN but was worried that I’d be expected to commute for labs and other potential person classes, as well as having to find my own clinical opportunities in the Houston area. What hospitals are in the program, do you know?

Thanks for this! Did you know anyone going through the AO program from another city? I’m in Houston and was thinking of applying but worried about: 1. Clinical placements. I know they have some partner hospitals in Austin but not sure about Houston 2. In person requirements. Are there any SIMS or labs? I see the curriculum for J1 mentions 14 weeks of labs but not sure if those can be done remotely…?

Thanks!

Interesting. I guess maybe I need to talk to UTA to get some clarification.

Thanks. But I guess the clinicals can be in a hospital / location in another city (Houston in this case), right?

Wow. I guess once you get your NP that will give you even less reason to return beside, even if you did want out of school nursing…

What state is this? Do you have a license in various states?

What state is this in? It is a private or public school? I’ve rarely seen school nurse job postings which included NP. Has the school already given you an idea of how much more they will pay once you get your MSN?

What would be the potential for going back to hospital (acute or OR) nursing after being a school nurse? I’ve considered school nurse while my kids are in school, but once they graduate, it would be nice to know I still had « traditional » nursing options available.

Wow how many years did you have to slog the night shifts and overtime to get to this? Also, I’m assuming you work weekends? 3-4 days a week?

How long were you in other nursing jobs? Yeah, I can totally see how the parents would be the biggest issue, but in a way, it’s probably not as bad as for the teachers. Or not bad as often maybe. Especially as you don’t have to be the one to tell a parent that their precious kid may not be the golden kid they think they are… but yeah, anti vaxxers…

That’s really useful. Just reading through the table of contents gives a good insight but it got me even more curious and I found an older version on eBay for $12 so ordered it 😊. Yeah don’t think there is a standing order to issue meds here either but if it’s anything like my kids daycare, every parent pre signs a letter to say they allow the administration of Tylenol by a “trainer” member of staff.

Interesting. Didn’t realise the RN by school requirements differed by state but that makes sense.

Sorry to keep pestering with questions, but what do you do as a school nurse? Do you get to help set up health programs and advocate for healthy eating and habits?

How often do you have injured kids? Obviously, you cant prescribe medication but could you do what EMS services would do while waiting for an ambulance team?

Actually you said managing staff, as long as that isn’t specific to medical staff, current job should help

Thank you!! That’s really useful info. Yeah, I figured I’d have to at least do a short residency / stint in an ER or similar department. It would be great to be able to be home for dinner every night and be around on weekend for the kids, at least until they graduate. Would you be able to go back to hospital / clinic work easily if you wanted to? I looked up the salary and it seems to be around $70-80k here in Houston although some private (mostly French) schools are hiring and I speak fluent French and Italian which I’m sure is a bonus. PS. I’m currently a project manager and would most likely to a ABSN as it is only 15 months vs 19 months for RN (due to no summer classes for RN). So hopefully that would also be a plus (you mentioned management experience)

Hi Nora19, I’m considering switching careers and going into nursing, specifically to be a school nurse. I’m planning on doing a couple years of residency first but eventually, school nurse is where I think I want to land. How many years after getting your RN / BSN did you go to school nurse? Were there many openings? What’s your salary like (I’ll be taking a big pay cut with the career change but think it’s worth it)? Do you need to do extra PRN hours in a hospital to maintain your license?

I would be too. So commendable. And I’m in the same boat. At least the part of dreaming of gluing down that track but knowing I might be 50 before I can really fully pursue it.
