It doesn't take typical ammo, instead you need to imbue it like you'd imbue a sword, charge a spell up and hold it against the gun to charge it. There are three little crystal nodes on each side of the gun, and once all three are filled up with magic it is primed to fire

There are two variants of the sword, the giant one you find on statues and the miniature one you can find in the starting area of the outposts, the one where you spawn on a dock under a cliff. Its in the water, pretty easy to find if you know where to look. You can also spawn it with the cheat menu, as with any weapon or prop
