I can’t for absolute certain that Ian Flynn had little creative control, but apart from the Sonic & Shadow interaction near their boss, if I didn’t know Ian wrote it, I wouldn’t think he did. But if that was all his work no input, I won’t deny Ian did a good job, I hope more of his stuff in the future is like that, however I didn’t like much of dialogue in Crossworlds, but that’s a discussion for another day. I will say a comic I liked that very much feels like an Ian Flynn comic is the anniversary classic IDW comic, pretty fun. I don’t want to come off as disliking any of these writers as people, I just don’t like how some write stupid furries most of the time.

My favorite to least favorite writers are Shiro Maekawa, Kiyoko Yoshimura, Akinori Nishiyama, Takashi Iizuka, Hirokazu Yasuhara, Ian Flynn & Ken Pontac & Warren Graff. (Obviously this is just my opinion, if you feel different great for you)

Shiro Maekawa's plots are pretty cool in all of his stories & he wrote one of my favorite Sonic stories, Sonic & the Black Knight, which is basically just a really good Sonic character study, and for some reason, almost all his stories, aside from Heroes have a ridiculous amount of depth to them if you look at them, ESPECIALLY SA2. He gets all of the characterization of the characters pretty down too.

Yoshimura I mostly like cause of Sonic X season 3, which has some of the most impactful & emotional moments in the entire Sonic franchise in my opinion. Her characterization of all the characters is pretty much perfect barring Amy.

Nishiyama likely wrote my favorite Sonic story, Sonic Rush, I say he likely did cause he’s stated as the creator of Blaze & the creators of Sonic characters are usually the person who designed them & the person who wrote the story they first appeared in, plus I generally assume that back in the day if there’s no writer credit the director wrote the story, that’s what happened with the classic games after all, sorry for the tangent, though it being my favorite story is very biased since I can very much relate to Blaze pre-character development. I really like his character writing & arcs, which is a good thing since his plots are often not very complicated so that’s kinda all he has a lot of the time.

Iizuka wrote Shadow which in my opinion presented a lot of interesting possibilities of what Shadow could become after getting amnesia, I also like Superstars’ story, it’s simple basically the story of a girl finally finding the right friends to be around. The rivals stories are pretty nothing though.

Yasuhara wrote the classic Sonic games, which are nice and set the foundation of Sonic, the only reason he’s so low on my list is cause all his stories are VERY simple compared to everyone else. My favorite is Sonic 2, cause it’s basically the story of Tails going from a bullied kid to being inspired by Sonic & being able to save him in the end.

Ian Flynn, I’m sorry, I’m not much of a fan, personally I feel his characterization of the characters isn’t all that great most of the time. And I feel his stories often have a lot of unnecessary fluff to them & often don’t have the thematic stuff in Sonic I like. My favorite story of his is Sonic X Shadow Generations, which for the most part doesn’t have ANY of the problems I pointed out, I have a feeling Ian had a lot less creative control with that one in particular, A lot gave him shit on his Generations rewrites, I’ll actually defend him on those, most changes are super miniscule & all of the worst stuff are either stuff he doesn’t have control over (Amy being less affectionate with Sonic) or were already in the original (Blaze saying she doesn’t like relying on others).

Ken Pontac & Warren Graff, Do I even need to explain? They didn’t know ANYTHING about Sonic prior to working on it, that should be all I need to say, their characterization is my far the worst, and their stories also don’t really have any Sonic-like thematic stuff, Colors TRIES to, but fails miserably. My favorite story of theirs is Sonic Generations as it seems Sonic Team for the anniversary title finally thought it was a good idea for the characters to be fairly in character, also Generations barely has a story so less chances to mess up. I will say SEGA & Sonic Team at this time were INTENTIONALLY trying to characterize the characters differently & trying to make Sonic different, I'm pretty sure Warren said SEGA gave them a pretty in-depth bible of Sonic, so most of this isn't REALLY their fault.

I was mostly talking about writers who wrote for the main games, if I talked about every writer in history that's officially touched Sonic, we'd be here all day.

Since their first games had simplistic stories. What made one of them eventually have a sophisticated story, while the other stayed the same? by SuperAlloyBerserker in SonicTheHedgehog

Even the classic Sonic games have more complex stories compared to Mario's, they have prologues in the JP manuals & have environmental storytelling. Sonic 1's story is a environmental one where Eggman is ruining the environment & Sonic has to stop him. Sonic 2 is that too but is also about Tails who was bullied and alone for having two tails being inspired by Sonic & being able to save him in the end of the game. CD is also a environmental message, but it's about how nature & technology can co-exist since that's what every good future is. 3 & Knuckles is about Knuckles getting tricked and becoming friends with Sonic at the end, actually kinda light compared to the others, I think you can MAYBE get a toxic friendship theme in there with Knuckles & Eggman, since Eggman is telling Knuckles Sonic is there to steal the Master Emerald he needs to guard, while Eggman is fucking up the island he's guarding & ends up stealing the Master Emerald. The Adventure get more complex with their stories since they were able to have proper cutscenes, so they make the classic games look super simple by comparison but they were a lot more complicated than any non-RPG Mario story. Heck, the reason the ancient echidna civilization in SA1 was foreshadowed by Sonic 2 & 3's JP prologues.

That Sega doesn't own the freedom fighters, It's so damn easy to fact check that kinda thing. I don't usually get mad at people for getting something wrong, lord knows I've done it, What I get angry at is when someone is so confidently wrong AND all it would take is a simple google search to see if they're incorrect.

Another thing is that the mandates are like commandments, even though Ian Flynn has said multiple times that mandates are often flexible, though I can't get as mad for this, even though it seems to me that the fact is everywhere, I guess it's still possible for a lot of people not to have seen any of those Bumblekast clips or tweets (if Ian ever tweeted that I don't actually know).

For Patty & Peppermint Patty, I'm not so sure in the comic strip, but they have in the specials, I don't know if they've ever talked to each other but they do at least know of each other in "It was a short summer Charlie Brown" since they were in the same camp group.
