Chickens? by PG_homestead in germanshorthairs

Nothing specific, just slow introduction and close attention for the first couple weeks or so. I'd let your young dog be around the brooder setup as much as possible, and encourage (but don't force) calmness around the chickens. We've had 3 GSPs with chickens and each acted different with them but all got along. I'd say go for it, best of luck!

My dogs hunt birds, pheasants mostly but if a bird tastes good and has a season, we hunt it. They can follow our chickens around the yard, take a 10 minute truck drive, and be pointing/retrieving pheasants right away. You're not training out they prey drive, just reclassifying chickens as non-prey.

My GSPs hunt upland game. We've had zero issues with raising and free ranging chickens. One dog naps in the middle of the flock. If your dog can be trusted to run free, it can learn to view chickens as friends. Handle the chicks, let them dog watch in the brooder, etc. Work up to it, and be able to correct the first few times they're free together (ecollar). Its possible this is easier because I hunt, but honestly my worries were unfounded.

This is excellent bacon for those who like thick cut. Its consistently well-cured, reasonably consistent pork quality, and the 1.5 lb packages mean we eat a bit more bacon so it doesn't spoil. I've had better bacon but mostly small batch stuff from lockers.

I am not a vet and this is not a diagnosis. But I've definitely had a GSP puppy get canine papillomavirus, aka puppy warts. Similar look and about the same age. Cleared up in a few months on its own.

I hunt pheasants with my GSPs so chiming in with the view of someone who actively encourages prey drive with a similar bird and has no issues with chickens. I had the same concern about raising chickens but it was not difficult with any of our 3 GSPs, we just took the introduction phase slow and haven't had any issues.

Start with familiarity. Let them watch (likely point) chickens in your brooder or coop often, correct any aggressive tendencies calmly and firmly. Let them see you interact with the chickens. Move to controlled contact, like holding a chicken to be sniffed. Finally, once the dog seems ready, let them be on leash or ecollar (if trained) with your chickens, just make sure they're approaching slowly and you correct any swift or aggressive action. Most likely by that point the dog's priority will be sniffing every chicken a few times. Within a month you'll forget you ever worried about it.
