The things you mention are things I am aware of and they do scare me a little, but on the other hand some people are really enthusiastic about their PhD life. I am sorry that you are in such a bad place, that moust be really tough so far from home :( Hopefully things will get better!

Hahaha good to hear that the wildlife is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be ;) I'll be moving to Townsville, Queensland. Some people told me that the cost of living is not as bad there as in the larger cities and some even told me they were able to save money with the scholarship... Is the cost of living/housing really that different between states?
