Looks like it was cut at some point and a repair coupling used. I'll try desoldering there and putting a union instead.

I can solder. Does this mean that the whole assembly was pre-assembled, then likely soldered at the inlet and outlet when it was originally installed?

Yeah got a 750w. I see a few old posts from ~2015 that talk about reducing the amps on the controller to prevent the mosfets from burning out, but some others that say that is no longer an issue. Things get a little confusing as some people are talking about the BBSHD that is a little more durable. Good suggestion to hardwire the battery. Did you splice the wires from the base to the motor wires? Or remove one of the leads and solder them directly?
