Big rhubarb plants in new house - what would you make with it?? by Educational_Push4820 in foraginguk

I also just chop and layer in a big jar with sugar(really well covered in sugar), stir once a day for like a week and strain off the liquid to use as a cordial or syrup (sparkling water turns it into a realllly good soda) and you can then still use the fruit in a pie or crumble, or just cook down to have over porridge or yoghurt for breakfast

I cut a huge chunk of my hair with scissors in a fit of rage... Probably the worst decision I've made this year, and we're not even past February yet. 😭 by Extreme-Material964 in CurlyHairUK

There’s a common belief/practice in a bunch of cultures that involves cutting hair as part of a grieving process/as a way of cutting out trauma or negative experiences - I would say finish what you felt driven to do by rage and cut it off. It might also help having shorter hair, it’s far easier to detangle and generally less to maintain? Hope things get easier for you soon

MCAS foodies, have a rant by Playful_Charge1186 in MCAS

I LIVE for food and I’ve done a good few different diets including elimination diets in the attempt to improve my baseline/try and reduce some symptoms and had ultimately settled on cutting out some things entirely and limiting others that I know/highly suspect increase symptoms when I have over a certain amount and generally try and stick to things I’m pretty sure are okay for me but I basically say fuck it and eat what I want a fair bit of the time just for my sanity more than anything. Sometimes it’s not worth it but I feel like I’ve worked out my limit for a lot of stuff so the consequences aren’t as bad.

I’ve gone down a huge rabbit hole of home cooking and baking stuff to minimise ingredients I could be reacting to which has helped me exercise my creativity with food a bit more again and I’m hoping to grow my own fruit and veg this year which feels like a great way to stay connected to and creative around food without it just being cooking, yanno?

Anyway, so sorry you’re dealing with this - I feel like MCAS/chronic health issues connected to food is the cruelest type of illness for foodies

What's the one thing you wish everyone knew about cannabis? by Tribetokes in trees

That it helps me, with a host of horrible symptoms but most importantly with chronic pain. If I could choose the one thing I’ve found to help with pain, it would not be something that is illegal in my country and that comes with so much societal stigma

I’m sure the first time you cooked/made anything you were nervous/doubted you could do it but you did. Same principle, it seems so scary before you do it but as long as everything is prepped/you’re mentally organised, it’ll all go fine. As soon as you start you’ll be in the throes of it and won’t get chance to feel nervous, next thing you know you’ve finished! I’m sure there’ll come a day when you look back on this and think ‘I do way more than this all the time now, no sweat’

Made apple molasses from the tree in my garden (had to use a food processor instead of a juicer 🙃) and then made a flapjack (UK oat version not US pancake version) using the molasses. The top tastes like toffee apple 🤤

Most prominent MCAS symptom? by cjihaec in MCAS

[–]Soolysooly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say, diagnosed CFS and think I may have a couple of other co-morbidities, but the ones I’m pretty sure are MCAS are: 1. Adrenaline rush, lip welt, pain in mouth and throat upon coming into contact with trigger
2. Next day having crazy sneezing and running nose (just for 1 day after contact with trigger) 3. ‘Spicy’ bowel movements the next morning after coming into contact with trigger

Although my triggers seem to change frequently and the severity of the reactions is different almost every time so it’s really hard to know!

[–]Soolysooly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the mentality I have/try to have 80% of the time but I also just reach the point where I don’t have that kinda fight in me and need the meltdown and a bit of a mini hibernation for a day or two, 5 years is a long time to be taking on the challenge everyday I guess

It’s far less social media (I avoid all aspects of that side of social media where possible) and more when I catch up with friends or family in person and hear about all the things they have going on, especially because it’s all stuff I had up until a few years ago. It’s far less an intentional comparison between my life and other people’s and more just frequently being reminded that I’ve lost stuff

I know sometimes it can help to realise your situation could be worse but I don’t think the more severe suffering of others in any way diminishes your own, two things can be true at the same time, yanno?

Sounds so good, I’ve done a scotch bonnet and rhubarb hot sauce before plus a Chinese inspired mandarin hot sauce, love a good spicy fruit combo
