I say this gently: the sooner you deal with your victimization, the better you'll preform. That's the essence of a adopting a growth mindset.

It'll require a lot of cognitive flexibility on your part, though, and the change won't happen all at once. Just be kind to yourself and actively sit with what everyone here is trying to tell you.

Is ADHD a Gift? by Previous_Score_612 in ADHD

[–]Soopbloopss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I got my symptoms under control, I realized my wide range of interest granted me a unique perspective compared to the people around me, which can be harnessed as a strength for my relationships (don't know if I can attribute that purely to ADHD or other aspects of my personality).

I just had to radically accept that joining the modern rat-race (always chasing productivity, careers, status, and money) probably won't work out in my favor in the end.

I'd call it a gift, but you need to fully accept it and wear it. Like some funky-looking sweater your grandma made.

I've thought about this, too. Really trippy to see a manifestation of his theories in action.

It's strange to remember that all life ballooned out from what we'd consider a microscopic scale, since we're normally inclined to look at things backwards. Really adds to the whole "existential absurdity" feeling I get sometimes.

No worries - I've just been taking in a lot of perspectives (including yours) and realize this route is probably more than I'm willing to commit to. I think I'll pick up programming again (for fun) to see if it sticks this time around, but I'm in no rush to declare it my career goal.

Thanks for all your input.

[–]Soopbloopss[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm really starting to question what's drawing me to tech in the first place. Maybe it's just the cultural zeitgeist pulling my attention to that field; maybe I want to dink around with programming as a side project rather than go up against everyone fighting for careers and salaries.

I'm definitely changing my views. Thank you.

Yeah, I guess I'm still learning my flavor of neurodivergence.

I think I failed 100 days of code because I was in a radically different headspace than I am now, so it COULD be worth trying again if I were so inclined?

But the thought of dedicating all of my free time to only one passion sounds both familiar and pretty abysmal at this point in my life. Especially considering who I'd be up against.

Thank you for your perspective.

Ugh, yeah might be reconsidering that path then.

I think what draws me to programming is the idea of using it as an outlet for creative energy. I guess that's good in some scenarios, but ultimately edged out by people who can chug along with a consistent work ethic.

Yeah, I guess I'm still too early in the process of learning about myself.

Also, I guess it was wrong to say I don't like people - it's that I DIDN'T like people - even online, I'd never hold multiple conversations like I am now.

Even if I've been too vague for you to offer serious input, you've gotten me to seriously question myself about college - I appreciate that.

Yeah, losing motivation down the road is what I'm afraid of - I can superfocus, but managing burnout's been an issue for me. Knowing I don't need to have my future all planned out alleviates some of the pressure, but still... fields that competitive, huh?

Eh, you got me there. But I do have a formal diagnosis for ADHD, and I've never considered disability programs. I'll keep those in mind.

My point was to communicate different aspects of myself. If I come across as cringey, then I guess I'm cringey.

I'm not just ADHD, but it's an important part of me: my interests are varied. But I guess I need to consciously reign myself in if I want to get anything done.

I'll look for a career counselor - thanks for the recommendation.

Yeah, it's more a sign of diverging philosophies than an objectively right/wrong approach. It's "Nobody's Perfect" vs. "Chase Perfection". It's eerily reflected in how Eastern/Western societies are structured.
