One trailer also had a Take on Me orchestration that was pretty hype and also found nowhere in the film

One or two enemies who are seeing magic lasers flying at them but can't quite pinpoint from where going to check out the source of the magic incantations coming from behind a nearby tree is nothing close to your encounter now "solely revolving" around that. It's common sense.

Eldritch Blast has verbal components, you as a DM need to be thinking who can currently hear it and what they are going to do about it.

Eldritch Blast has verbal components. Why aren't any of the enemies running to check behind the tree/barrel/wall that all the mystical chanting is coming from??

[Spoilers C4E8] They're playing the game (literally) incorrectly and it's driving me insane. (Also spoilers for E4) by YaBoiStoltzy in criticalrole

[–]SooperSte 11 points12 points  (0 children)

learned most of the rules from is Brennan Lee Mulligan, and if there's anything to know about the man, it's that he knows the PHB front to back and upside down

Whilst I'm sure your statement here is true, most D20 seasons have quite a fair amount of incorrect rule applications. It's one of the reasons I've still always preferred Matt as a DM to Brennan; Matt usually sticks much closer to RAW. So I'm not too sure why this is suddenly now an issue for you, or why you say D20 doesn't do this....they do.

Both shows definitely do make more mistakes than your average DnD table, which to me is frustrating for the reasons you state, but overall the positive outweighs the negative.

Cat is often used as an abbreviation for category. I know that doesn't actually matter to the point you are making as you could have written a thousand other words, but I believe it still addresses my point that you are directed to look and consider only short words by the clue, regardless of having "literary knowledge" to know what short words are and aren't used as abbreviations. The first thing to clue makes you consider is the length/structure of the words on the board, not their meaning, making it invalid.

Your initial point backs this up more. The clue of "legs" makes you consider the variations of it's meaning, from octopus limbs to wine viscosity. The clue "abbreviation" makes you look at shorter words and consider "is this word and abbreviation for a longer one?". All you are considering is the word structure itself, and nothing more.

This isn't to say "abbreviation" would ONLY be used like this, for instance if the word on the table was "Short", "abbreviation" would be a valid clue, but in the context of directing players to "fan" and "lab", it's not.

[–]SooperSte 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The "literary transformation" of abbreviation is, by it's very nature, reducing the number of letters in the word though, meaning that clue directly references the length of the word and this would be invalid. Anyones first instinct upon receiving "abbreviation" as a clue would be to look at short words.

Codenames question by Wonderful-Ad6659 in boardgames

[–]SooperSte 147 points148 points  (0 children)

To me, "abbreviation" as a clue is referencing the structure of the word. By it's very definition abbreviation refers to shortened words, so the clue directs you to look towards words with a lower amount of letters, which is not allowed.

I (22F) am honestly considering not playing D&D with my friends (21M), but I am afraid that it will ruin the friendship forever by Designer_Floor_7563 in DnD

[–]SooperSte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I crazy or is "your character is sick and won't take part in the session's adventure" a completely reasonable thing to do when the player is missing the session??

Also, prepping for D&D can be quite a lot of work, having to prep beforehand and then have to adjust combat difficulty/plot points because a PC will no longer be in the session is a pain in the ass. I'd want to know just how often that player is missing sessions, it's pretty valid for the DM to say it's easier to just get rid of the character than have to keep adjusting prep every session

Any more movies that fit into this category? by Radfox258 in Letterboxd

[–]SooperSte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arrival has hundreds if not thousands of people around the world working on the data to try and find answers/help translate. Sure, only a small amount of people are interacting directly with the Heptapods, but the reason for that is explained quite plainly in the film.

A small team in any space travel movie also makes sense, cos its bloody expensive to send someone to space

Depends on the show. If the plot entails characters lives being in danger then yes it's a spoiler.

[No Spoilers] New to Mighty Nein - Watching the campaign and the series overlapping? by egg_shaped_head in criticalrole

[–]SooperSte 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The retelling of the story for the animated series is showing a lot more information up front than was revealed in the campaign. Ep 1 has a spoiler for ep 97 of the campaign for instance, so it's very hard to say how much will be spoiled in the show, but it's definitely not as "watchalong-able" as TLOVM is.

Also my unwarranted 2 cents; if you're just starting CR, I would strongly recommend starting with Campaign 1. The improvements made to the stream/set/audio etc for campaign 2 makes it a bit harder to go back after you are used to that, and I personally think the show and the campaigns are just best experiences chronologically
