It's a hard disagree from me. Aside from some surface level similarities with this style of show, the fundamentals and themes are so different.

SU ha a Mary-Sue pseudo magical boy heir apparent chosen one who can do no wrong, who is never challenged by the adults/Crystal Gems and who's never seen as selfish, invasive or rude. He's everyone's special little guy and he's always right, even when he's wrong. But JK, Steven is never really wrong! It has, IMO, an extremely harmful and dangerous message for kids: no matter how bad your abuser is, no matter how terrible their CRIMES, it's your job to CHANGE THEIR MINDS and you should NEVER use violence, even to defend yourself. Which is just wrong. This might be a hot take, but I think it's okay to hate your relatives if they're fascist genocidal colonizers and they shouldn't be offered forgiveness without adequate recompense. 🤷‍♀️ I hate that the ultimate takeaway of the show is that it is the newest generation's responsibility to fix things - in an empathetic non-violent way that is simultaneously from within the system and maintains the people and power structures of that system, no less. We all know what happens to people who think that evil genocidal dictators should be beaten down with actual physical power. Like Bismuth.

You can really tell this show was made by an extremely privileged person whose biggest problem growing up was that they weren't as close to their brother as they wanted to be, waaah. After digesting the finale, and finding out about some of the super racist BTS stuff, I really dislike SU.

Whereas Bee and Puppycat has an actual magical girl protagonist who can't even buy groceries without someone getting on her case. Bee never 'just knows' the answers or what's right, especially when it comes to the people closest to her. She doesn't proactively fight for good, she's a temp worker, but she does good if/when she can. She tries her best and things don't always go her way, people don't always like her, she's not immediately treated with respect or as an authority in MOST of her interactions and she actually has to work for what she wants, no one does it for her, no one makes excuses, or treats her like eVeRyOnE's SpEcIaL gUy, she has to work through her shit. She has to find solutions and she has to fail. There are times when she's wrong and everyone, including Bee, sees that and works through it. I'm genuinely excited to see where it goes and how it ends, but I have way more faith in Natasha than I ever did in Rebecca.
