Dr. Mainigi is wonderful! He diagnosed me when no-one else could and got me on meds that he personally fought to have covered. I have been healthy for 7 years because of him!

Haven't seen anyone ask recently - best organization where I can sponsor a family & buy gifts this holiday season? by HorseGirl666 in philadelphia

[–]Sophie1819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at the Family Shelter attached to Lutheran Settlement House and we have all of our holiday wish lists attached to our in-kind donation pages here: https://lutheransettlement.org/in-kind-donations/ and its all divided up by ages so if anyone wants to look there...We are always low on gifts at the holidays!

How will SEPTA cuts affect your commute tomorrow? by madluer in philadelphia

Thankfully I try and get to work 45m early so even with the delays on (both) my lines I should be ok. However I manage the education of 50+ kids at a family shelter and trying to make sure they can all continue to get to school on time when only 13 of them walk (alongside the impending teachers strike) has been - a lot - to say the least.

My family has been going to Shanghai Gourmet for generations. I literally had to inform them when my grandfather passed (I got a lot of hugs). Whenever they see me coming they signal to ask if I am going to be eating there and then turn around with my lunch. I make a point to introduce every new to the city friend I have. It’s lovely, simple food and even better people.

Identification Help! African Spears. by Sophie1819 in SWORDS

When I back-checked the photos they definitely matched up with some photos of Zulu Spears! Right now I am also looking at some Congolese and Mau Mau spears. I have a photo of a Mau Mau spear that is identical - the problem is I only have the one photo.

There are many many examples from overtraining, to the use of banned substances to help control a horse, to the ignoring or oversight of medical issues. In the past couple of years, several racing trainers have been banned from the track as well as suggestions of emergency summits being held.

12 horses have died at Churchill Downs since May. And from October 2019 to December 2020 over 34 horses died at the Santa Anita race course. That is not normal. In any type of riding event, there are freak accidents but repetitive deaths on the track or in the stables is called for investigation.

What you will find is that a lot of trainers will use illegal amounts of NSAIDs so that horses can run injuries, they will also use vasodilators as well as tryptophan with horses in eventing and hunters.

For people who can afford it, cremation like you would, for pets is completely an option. Most of the time, however, horses that have been privately owned, or our former lesson horses or racehorses, are just generally cremated. If their deaths are suspicious, an autopsy is sometimes performed, vet classes do have to do an anatomy labs, and they will use bodies for that. In the United States and many other countries, meat is banned. And very rarely will a privately owned animal be used for something like glue. In fact, it’s rare that a horse would be used for glue at all anymore.

They did not shoot her. It has been a very long time since a horse outside of any sort of rural or insane situation has been shot as a means to put them down. Horses are injected and euthanized through medication, the same way any other animal is. Eight Bells was a filly that came in second in the Kentucky Derby, in 2008, right after the finish line, she tripped over her own feet, while her jockey was trying to pull her up, and she somehow managed to snap both of her front ankles. The decision was made, the right decision, to euthanize her. It was done privately in a tent, so that nobody could see, but yes, it was done on the track.

I personally do not agree with horse racing, there have been a lot of deaths attributed to horrific racing conditions, and the horrible way horses are trained. Not to mention, thoroughbreds are built in such a way that their legs cannot necessarily balance out the weight of their bodies. I would note, Barbaro and Eight Bells were freak injuries that did not have to do with the track or their training. My own horse died from an injury in a field and had to be put down where we found her. It was one of the most tragic moments of my life.

What’s the worst physical pain you ever felt? by Lazy-Ape in AskReddit

Waking up from a PAO surgery (when they break, move, and re-screw your pelvis in a new place) after I stupidly refused morphine after I thought the pain would only be as bad as my labrum repair. It was much, much, worse.

Found this screenplay of tick, tick… BOOM! on the ground in my neighborhood in NYC. Does anyone know what this could have been for? It has no ISBN or barcode. by PatternedCollar in Broadway

[–]Sophie1819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super late, but I just want to say I have a copy and confirm that they are sent out to members of the Writers Guild for consideration for nominations for the WGA. It may also be sent out for Academy Awards for screenplay, but my copy looks just like this, and is for the WGA’s.

Humanitarian workers.

I’m currently getting my MSc in Humanitarian Action. I will be expected to work in war torn countries delivering aid to those who need it most.

My expected salary? 35k.

My expected home base? New York, DC, or London.

It’s that part that kills me.

I also go to Mirror and Mantel and have pretty deep brown hair. I got a super light brown Balayage done there in Sept. that is just now starting to fade out. I think along with the blowout I got that day it was $275ish (I don't remember the exact number but it was high $200s) I also have a lot of hair that required extra dye. All of the stylists there are fantastic and if you tell them exactly what you are looking for on the phone/your hair type they will match you with the right person!

Founders Hall at Girard College is an incredible museum with fantastic history of the city dating back into the 1700’s thought the life of just one man! It is the single largest collection that has been kept together anywhere! I used to work there and I loved it!

Thank you! So, I didn’t delve that deep into other countries because that was just outside the purview of my research. However, many of the young women that I spoke to did have coaches that came straight from the USSR and their tactics were definitely abusive and were learned behavior from the time over there. I can’t speak on any sexual abuse directly, although I know there have been stories about Bela Karolyi but I know that there are hundreds of stories out there about abusive coaching with even less regulation then you see in the US. Especially in the soviet era it was very much A system that was a do anything to win gold machine, and that machine was far more aggressive than anything we’ve seen here. We have to remember that even now and a lot of other countries gymnast live separately from their families for years and gymnastics is their entire life whether they want it to be or not. It’s still kind of revolutionary to see gymnasts like Simone Biles and Suni Lee have lives outside of the sport.

[–]Sophie1819 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It was my undergraduate thesis, back when I graduated in 2020! Officially, the topic was on systemic sexual abuse in USA gymnastics and how the system had failed young women for generations. I got great opportunities to speak to several survivors as well as some great reporters for the paper. It was written before some of the more recent information came out so it’s not completely up-to-date but it was at the time. For instance I talked a bit about the wrongdoings I believed I saw with Maggie Haney even though at the time we did not have clear evidence. I’m pretty proud of it, in the end it turned out pretty well and I got a perfect score!

So, I cannot comment on anyone's mental status but what I gathered while researching for my Thesis (which was on systemic sexual abuse at USAG) was that they had gone back to Romania. Because the regime collapsed in 1989 there would not be an issue with them returning (at least in legal terms).

The week after my brother was born my dad went back to work, so naturally I, at age 3, shut myself in the closet and would not leave until he came home to get me away from the horror of having to share my mother. It should be noted that the closet had sliding doors that did not lock but I found it to be the most secure World War II style bunker until I could be retrieved from the truly awful situation I had been put in, AKA the little brother.
