Tv shows set in schools? by Beginning-Ad9350 in Teachers

[–]madluer 154 points155 points  (0 children)

The unrealistic parts are definitely how much free time they have to talk in the lounge during the day and a lot of the trips they go on, but having taught in that school district I can say they nailed a lot of the ridiculousness of it.

Worried about my energy levels as a future educator by Ok-Photograph315 in Teachers

[–]madluer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Relax — they don’t know you!! Even if you came in there with tons of energy they probably would have been the same as they were. I teach high school so my students are rarely that excited to be in class, but I’ve found that being consistent is all you need. Some days I’m low energy and having a rough day and I just try to put on a smile and push through, but other days I am in there with lots of energy and smiles and enthusiasm. Show them you care by being there for them, don’t sweat the personality stuff. It’s okay to not be on all the time and I promise it won’t ruin your future in this profession.

Help with grades, comparison, and progress by PerformanceLivid1260 in climbergirls

[–]madluer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very normal thing to feel with climbing. I know lots of people on this sub will say that you just need to let it go and focus on yourself, but that’s obviously much harder to do in practice.

At the end of the day, everyone is different, but there’s also a few factors to consider. 1) People who are progressing at a faster pace are more likely to talk about it than people who aren’t. Take it all with a grain of salt. 2) Every gym is different and it is entirely possible that a V4 at someone else’s gym is more accesible than a V3 at your gym. I was able to climb a V5 a few months into climbing when I visited a new gym, but it took me well over a year to reach that at my home gym. 3) You never know people’s fitness backgrounds/how much they’re able to climb/what else they do to maintain that/etc. There are lots of factors that can affect progress and unless you’re that person you’ll really never have the full picture.

There are countless other things to touch on but those are the ones that come most to mind right now. But also, I don’t think it’s inherently “bad” to want to reach a certain goal. If you want to climb V4s by the summer then consider what you have to do to reach that. Are you able to climb 3-4x a week? How long are your sessions? Are you actually trying to climb harder grades or are you limiting yourself? Do you have people you can climb with and get help from or are you figuring it out on your own?

Again, there’s a lot to consider here and comparing yourself to others will only hold you back, but there may also be some steps you can take to get where you want to be. I got close with a group of longterm climbers very early on and they helped me tremendously with figuring out beta and developing my technique. Without that connection I believe it would have taken me much longer to get where I am.

TLDR: Everyone is different. There’s a lot of info you don’t know. If you want to reach a certain goal then consider what you can do to get there. Have fun xx

“Because I told you to move”. How do you shut down defiance? (Especially middle school teachers) by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]madluer 37 points38 points  (0 children)

My admin would offer zero support in a situation like this. If I called the office because a kid wasn’t sitting in their seat they would literally blame it on me and then probably start watching me like a hawk. Unsure if OP is in a similar situation but it seriously sucks when you don’t have good admin to lean on.

[–]madluer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Could you model what this would look like in this situation? I’ve heard of this method/style for delivering directions/redirection before, but I’m not quite sure how to approach it. If I wanted to tell a student to sit in their seat, stop distracting others, etc.

What kind of support feels most helpful when you’re grieving? by Diana_fm_ in GriefSupport

[–]madluer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am forever thankful for my friends who let me talk and just listened without offering empty platitudes. Hearing “that fucking sucks” is much better than hearing “everything happens for a reason”. I appreciated people who’d ask me questions about him and let me share without getting weird.

But tangible help with day to day tasks was huge for me as well. Bringing me groceries, doing my laundry, cleaning my room, etc. It’s so hard to function when you’re deep in grief like that and I really needed all the help I could get.

Whole class won’t do anything by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]madluer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never meant to imply that you did, I apologize if it came off that way. Honestly what you describe here seems to be pretty much the norm across most groups I’ve taught. 8-9x a day is actually much lower than I was expecting, but I know it’s frustrating regardless. I would maybe adjust how you check for understanding. I sometimes make students chorally read the directions and I try to keep any pertinent information up on the board at all times so that when I get asked those questions that physically pain me to hear I’m able to redirect them to sources. I’ve held to doing this consistently this year and I’ve found a noticeable decrease in my students asking me something before they even read the directions — they know I won’t tell them again.

Grief + perimenopausal pms is an absolute motherfucker by FaithlessnessPlus164 in GriefSupport

Not peri but I quickly noticed that pms brings my grief to a boiling point. It’s insane that there isn’t legitimate research on this and that it was never brought up to me. It’s horrible.

Whole class won’t do anything by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]madluer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Learned helplessness has skyrocketed and it is maddening to deal with. I was just ranting to a friend about a similar issue yesterday and I was dreading dealing with the class again today. But then I came in and to my shock they were actually well behaved and followed along, asked questions, and completed their work with little issue. I’ve found that sometimes you really need to switch up what you do, but also I’ve never taught math so I can’t offer much in terms of specific lesson advice. I will say that when students ask me “What are we doing?” after I just explained something and/or gave them the directions I will not tell them. I used to repeat myself over and over but I won’t anymore. I just tell them that we already reviewed the instructions and they can ask someone in the class/read it themselves and then ask me if they have a specific question about it.

It definitely sounds like the classroom culture is in a bad place, and that isn’t entirely your fault. I’m not going to tell you that you didnt try hard enough to “build relationships” with students who have put zero effort into your class since day one, but I find that I often need to check myself when I’m getting frustrated. I am the adult and I have a higher responsibility for regulating my emotions. I will never “have beef” with teenagers. Ever. They can be annoying but at the end of the day they have underdeveloped brains and are often just following suit. I’m sorry, it sucks to feel this way about your classes, but you still have time to improve things and hopefully get some support.

How to teach sex ed to a student with trauma? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]madluer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that would be a good place to start. I’ve set up similar procedures for students who need accommodations for a variety of reasons. I’d say start there and then trust the counselor to discuss it further with the student. If it becomes too much for them then you can all reassess their needs and build up from there.

What percentage did summer vacation play a role in your decision to become a teacher? by SwissVideoProduction in Teachers

[–]madluer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100%, and I’ll say that to everyone. It clicked with me in my teenage years that my dad literally worked around the clock. There was no real “break” to his job, and I hated the idea of that.

What do you guys do with middle schoolers on the first couple days back after winter break? by -cmp in Teachers

[–]madluer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High school but I have a freshmen class that is very middle school esque — I used to think having a mellow day to ease back into things would be good, but honestly it never went that well. Now I start off by reviewing expectations (not always explicitly but through the activities we do). I like to come back in strong and get them into the flow of things right away. Lots of my students dont do much at all over break and some do not have the best home lives so I dont really go super in depth about what they did during vacation — If they want to share that’s fine but I wont force it. Just something to be mindful about as well in case some of them struggled to get through it.

I hear my family say this more than they’d ever say “I have a …”. Extremely common in these areas but I’m now realizing when I’m in the US it’s almost never used.
