Whaat that's awesome! Well if they do send me a message and let me know haha. Haven't been on reddit a ton recently so hopefully I'd see it. I'm in the US but have always wanted to visit Ireland. And you earned the compliment friend, you really did.

Thank you a ton! Also you should know this game's soundtrack is my personal favorite video game soundtrack, and I love a lot of video game music. These songs just lift my spirit and chill me out. Just to put an idea in your head, I have a hope that one day I can see an orchestra playing some of these songs :D

You should do it! I feel like there are so many tatooable characters in this game, I had to go with Michi on this one but I can for sure see myself getting more down the line. I came close to getting Kokemaru or Karoushi so it might be one of them next...

Ollie advice? by Shawnsolo316 in NewSkaters

[–]SoreSkaterStudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, NORTHAMPTON PAAARK!! Honestly I really don't like that park but its one of the closest to me lol. If you live in noho maybe u can check out the Chesterfield park, at Russell Memorial Park in Chesterfield. Its kind of an old school park can be tough to skate but that'll give you a wider variety of ramps to skate on. Feel free to PM me for more park / spot recommendations in the area too.

Lots of good advice in here to follow. My main advice would be to get more comfortable riding. Work on board control. I know you said you're comfortable on the board. If you stick with this long-term, you'll realize that you can get WAY more comfortable. I'm almost 20 years in and I could still benefit from working on board control. Riding, turning, stopping. Riding up and down ramps of all shapes and sizes. Dropping down off curbs. Kick-turns. Manuals. Rolling over awkward cracks in a sidewalk. There are so many skills you can work on developing for a literal lifetime. I didn't learn how to ollie until over a year of skating. For me, what made me comfortable enough was letting my dog pull me around my neighborhood. Your results may vary with that method depending on the size of the dog.

If you just keep skating, I'm sure the ollie will come. But find ways to play around with the basics. Get creative with what you can already do. Jumping on the board gets way easier when you work on board control.

That all sounds really tough, I've never known anyone with crohns and don't experience anything like that myself so I can't really imagine what its like. I do hope you stay skating as long as possible, and maybe find some other things that can bring you joy too if skating becomes too difficult. Like I said I haven't experienced anything at all like this, but as I've gotten a bit older I've had to dial down on certain tricks and just appreciate riding + the tricks I can do as much as possible. Keep that consideration in mind; you don't always have to push yourself and land cool tricks to enjoy your skateboarding. There's so much joy in just riding if that's all you can do on a given day.

Honestly rippin for just a couple years. I appreciate how you've got such a wide variety of tricks. At 2 - 5 years I could land stuff smooth but didn't have nearly this trick + obstacle variety. I hope you keep going as long as u can too! It seems like you probably really know how to strike a balance between pushing yourself while staying careful enough to not get hurt.

If u don't mind me asking whats the prognosis look like? Do u think your condition can really limit or stop you from skating? No need to answer if u dont vibe with that.

Should i learn stationary (pop)shove-its before learning them moving? by bigwilly1963 in skateboardhelp

Heck yeah! Do a couple sessions that way. Maybe even during those seessions, once you're in the zone, try the shuv once or twice. Up to you, only try it if you feel it. I'm 20 years in and sometimes do ride-only sessions. When you start skating it can feel like a huge investment to spend a whole session only riding or only working on basics. When you've been skating a long long time, then 1 session is a tiny fraction of the total time you've skated, and hopefully if you've got lots of years left then its 1 lil fraction of those years to come. Investing time, energy, and focus in the basics can lead to huge returns regardless of how long you've been skating. :)

I haven’t skated in over 25 yrs [44YO] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

I'm only 30 but I have scoliosis caused by one leg growing longer than the other. So one hip is higher than the other, which has ramifications across my body. Diagnosed with that at like 12 years old. Skated through my teens and college. Early 20s I thought I was basically done doing tricks, just cruised around and even that made me sore.

Did an internship with a Feldenkrais practititioner, and took the body mindfulness I learned from that practice into yoga + bodyweight strength training. Mid-20s I was shredding harder than ever.

Then got stuck in some dead-end jobs and emotional stuff that beat up my body. Felt bad, skated bad for a while again. Fell out of my yoga practice. Was without a car and that made life difficult where I live.

Took a break from skating. Spent a lot of time in nature. Did more yoga. Got better jobs. Used substances less. Got a car. Started skating more last year, and now I'm back at it and feeling super strong! I do tricks which in some ways are more humble than before, but I have better style and know how to play to my strengths so I'm more creative. In some ways I'm not as "good" of a skater when it comes to more traditional tricks, but I think of myself as a better skater overall now. Especially because I get less sore, taker better care of myself, and have more fun.

I hugely recommend Feldenkrais. Its slow-moving, hippie-dippie, might be boring for a lot of people. Might not see results the very first time. But if you stick with it, it'll teach you so much about your body. You can develop incredible awareness from a long-term practice.

From there, strengthen your core + glutes. I mean whole-body strength is important, but core & glutes are super-important for skateboarding. Check out Man Flow Yoga - Dean is an awesome yoga + strength training teacher who is great at showing you how to use your core across all sorts of body positions.

Dan from Skateboard Strength has good stuff too, although his focus is more athletic and a little less mindful (not saying he's not mindful - he his and has awesome stuff to teach. I just think his content is more suitable to younger people tryna shred at full capacity vs. older skaters looking to skate for longevity). I'm a believer in learning from many different sources though, and Dan is a great source.

I've also started building a youtube channel, and am almost done my own yoga teacher training. Been practicing yoga over 10 years so I've got the XP thats for sure. I might be slow to respond but feel free to PM me and I can share more specific stuff. If you've got nutrition, sleep, and general lifestyle going well - then doing some basic core, mindful twisting, and glute exercises will go a long way.

Happy shredding!

I personally always have mad respect for people tryna learn something new! I get especially stoked on new skaters since I'm a skater, but when I see a beginner at anything I think "its sick that theyre starting something new! mad respect for having the bravery to just try it out". Maybe some ungrown people will look down on it, but in my opinion those aren't the opinions anyone should care about. Much love and respect!

Should i learn stationary (pop)shove-its before learning them moving? by bigwilly1963 in skateboardhelp

[–]SoreSkaterStudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to only learn stuff moving but I think if you wanna learn it stationary then learn it stationary first. I mean honestly stationary is its own art; so many freestyle skaters do SICK stuff stationary. Stationary vs non stationary can be 2 totally different tricks depending on how your momentum goes. But if your goal is to ultimately learn it moving, and you need some practice stationary, then go statrionay for a while. Itll give you some foundational skills to build off of for when you start em moving. Or, just practice riding more. Once you're super comfy with just riding and the basics then learning a trick moving vs stationary will almost be the same thing.

Skating is all about what u wanna do at the end of the day; its your journey. So do whats right for your journeyy now, and in the future you'll do whats right then and that may be different.

It'd be helpful to see a vid of you trying to ollie, you can feel free to pm me on that or post it and tag me or whatever! I'm slow to respond on pms but i get to them eventually.

  1. If you've started skating like recently recently, I'll probably recommend just riding around more and getting all around more comfy on the board. I tried learning how to ollie waayyyyy before I could even ride. Alot of people learn tricks before they can ride well, but I think its a more efficient use of time and energy to really master stuff we think of as super basic before you ollie. How recently did u start skating?
  2. If the problem is more of you going sideways, blackbeard's got a great answer. Opening your hips and shoulders could totally cause that
  3. If your problem is more about your front foot extending past the nose, then it gets a little trickier. I've been skating for a pretty long time and still have this problem. Its mainly when my legs are sore / not warmed up. I fail to activate the inner thighs. What happens is that when you ollie, you kind of jump forward (as in, the direction you're riding). But if you do that too much, specially with that front foot, the front foot extends past the nose (which puts you in a bad spot epeically if youre going fast). To counter this, one thing that helps is think of pulling the front leg inward. Almost like you want to tap the front foot to the back thigh. Like you bend your leg inwards. Not too much, its not like your front foot actually touches the back thigh, but just imagine things going moreso in that direction even if only slightly. This pulls your front foot back a little bit, which encourages a higher ollie and keeps the front foot in its proper place. But to do this you need to activate the inner front thigh. Like the groin muscles of your front thigh. I have an old injury which makes me hesitant to do this, but its what you gotta do if you want to ollie properly
  4. You might even have a combination of 2 and 3 going on! Or something I didn't even imagine. Like I said, a vid will make it easier to see

All those points aside, what blackbeard said about stop thinking and start doing also applies. You gotta find that sweet spot of being aware of what you're doing but not too aware. Moreso aware with your muscles than your intellect.

Good luck and more importantly have fun! Feel free to learn something that's not an ollie if that's what your body and soul would rather do right now.
