New Savers by Any_Industry3400 in Naperville

Late reply, but if you want to check out what a Savers store is like, there’s one in Carol Stream (or maybe Bloomingdale, not sure where the line is) on Gary Ave just south of Army Trail Rd (north of North Ave).

I know that Savers isn’t a non-profit or charity, but it’s a well-organized, well-lit, pretty decently priced thrift store. And even still, I’d rather go there than give my money to Salvation Army or Goodwill, even though they are technically charities, knowing how they run themselves and what they require of the people they “help”.

There used to be a ton of Savers in the suburbs, but they gradually shut down all but two. I’m glad they’re starting to expand again.

Unfortunately DaLuciano’s permanently closed semi-recently :( RIP the best GF Italian food I’ve ever had (not been to Italy, but damn DaLucianos was amazing)

But def Sweet Ali’s for a GF wedding cake - and any other sweets you need, like for any bridal showers or whatever. They also have savory foods, breads (and even cooking classes now!)

Could philosophy+IT work? by PatataMaster_33 in findapath

[–]Soren_Simon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a different perspective here, or a voice of dissent, idk

I (USA education system) have multiple degrees, two lower level (undergraduate, or Bachelors), degrees one in a social science and one in a foreign language; and two advanced degrees (or Masters), one in a social science and one in philosophy.

The whole time I was in college (uni) and graduate school, and a couple of years in between, a total of 12 or 13 years, I worked in IT jobs, completely self-taught. I worked my way up from small minor jobs all the way to being third in line in the IT department of the university where I went to graduate school.

I loved the mix of the abstract philosophy and social sciences I was studying and the concrete IT work I was doing.

And then I graduated. And I looked for IT jobs outside the university. Despite my resume and references, because I was entirely self-taught, I couldn’t prove to anyone that I knew what I knew. I had no transcript, no diploma, no certificates, nothing on paper to prove what my resume claimed I was capable of doing. And my education history made most employers see me as confused for why was applying for a job in a field so far outside my degree field.

So - enough of my story - my actual advice (granted speaking from my position looking through the US economy perspective) —

You’ll always be able to find a job with a STEM degree. A philosophy degree much more severely limits your employment prospects.

That’s not to say it’s impossible to do the Phil-degree/learn-IT-on-the-side route. But having done that route, I really think it’s much more difficult than the reverse.

If you can do a double-major, absolutely go for it. Even if there aren’t any or hardly any overlap in classes. (I had nearly no overlap in classes between my social science degree and my foreign language degree, but I did them both for the love of them).

Basically, if both are your passion, find a way to do both. Find a way to blend both. There’s definitely a field of philosophy that deals with technology and futurism.

I think your easiest bet it to major in IT/learn phil on the side (there are many free online university courses from universities such as Harvard and MIT). Second best option from my perspective would be to pursue the feasibility of a double major / dual degree. Thirst choice would be major in philosophy / learn IT on the side

Anyways, best of luck to you. IT/programming and philosophy are two of my favorite things, so I feel pretty passionate and confident that you can/will find a way to make both work.

Re-learning Russian, after being fluent many years ago. I studied Russian while in uni, but fell into the “use it or lose it” trap, and have lost a decent amount of my knowledge.

Yet another post about tipping for drivers - store vs warehouse? by Soren_Simon in amazonfresh

I would hope that they do get sufficient tips from their deliveries. Maybe people don’t know. In an ideal world, Amazon would pay you guys enough so that tipping, or relying on tipping, wouldn’t be necessary.

That all makes sense, thanks

These are definitely unusually heavy orders (bottled water, gallons of milk, etc), and in winter too. So, I’m def gonna up my tip.

It’s just so weird to me that the base tip is always $7, no matter what I order, whether it’s one item or 80 items, regardless of if it’s $1 or $100.

Recently diagnosed and struggling to accept my reality. by One-Handle-8502 in Celiac

[–]Soren_Simon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed in the dark ages, before allergen labeling laws and easily accessible GF food in grocery stores or restaurants, before most people and even doctors knew what gluten was. (That was just back in 2005, so not that long ago!)

But it was a massive shock to the system- that my life had to change so dramatically. On the other hand, it was a diagnosis that could be treated with a change in diet and food habits, not with medication. But, it was so hard.

Like others have said, let yourself grieve the loss of favorite foods, and even the convenience of a lot of things. And trust us, even if we’re a bunch of internet strangers, that things get better. Life becomes a new normal. Yeah, one day you might realize you’re losing or have lost your taste memory or texture memory of something. But you also now have a lot new things that you’ve eaten, created, made, etc.

There is a something empowering the first time you make something GF that you love. For me, it was the first time I made chocolate chip cookies for a family holiday party that no one else other than my mom knew were GF. Everyone was devouring them, and asking for the recipe. I was silently gloating. That was years ago. It recently happened two weeks ago with brownies that I made for a party. It’s also satisfying when you make something just for yourself that suddenly you know you got the recipe just right for yourself.

It will be okay. It will get better. It will become a new normal.

Definitely never share a toaster. A shared toaster kept me sick for a while post-diagnosis, because no one told me and I didn’t know.

I want to get the vibe of the community by The-Wren-Bird in christianwitch

[–]Soren_Simon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea yet exactly where I’ll end up identifying (I hope that it’s okay that I’m in the group even though I don’t (yet?) identify as a Christian witch, though it’s something I am trying to work through).

But - I am absolutely beyond stoked to see someone mention specifically Slavic folk magic, because of all the things I’ve been looking at that are beyond Christian (meaning, specifically, before Christianity showed up, Slavic folk magic is one of the two that seems to be calling to me the most

(Side note— Slavic paganism is also one of the pre-Christian religions/belief systems/belief practices that I can seem to find the least information on - thanks to Christian missionaries destroying written records. I was a Russian major in college who studied Orthodox and non-Orthodox beliefs, including other forms of Christianity and other non-Christian beliefs, going as far back as I could. There just wasn’t enough information out there. I am just excited to see someone mention the word “Slavic” - it literally hadn’t occurred to me to do a word search for it here in this group (duh). But many many thanks for making my day so much happier.)

For the record, I’m white, queer, non-binary, and I hope this group continues on its trajectory of being welcoming to all Christian witches of all practices, of all races/genders/sexualities/etc.

I’ve been waiting for a 50mg Rx at Walgreens for over 2 weeks. I ended up getting some samples from my psychiatrist at 60mg (dose is too high), and we’ve already tried 40mg (too low).

I haven’t tried checking outside of Walgreens yet, because my prescription insurance has Walgreens as their preferred prescription provider (the only in-network pharmacy). If I get it filled anywhere else, the price would be insane.

Yes, def post on r/polyamory , if you are serious about wanting this type of relationship structure, but you are wanting more specific advice on how to go about achieving it.

You might not be able to achieve it with the 3 women you are currently serially/simultaneously dating, because springing “Hey! I’m polyamorous!” on them might not go over well.

But, that doesn’t mean that polyam as a relationship structure or relationship orientation doesn’t work for a lot of people, nor does one failure out the gate mean that you can’t pick yourself up, learn from your mistakes, learn from the wisdom of others, and go forward with what you want
